I know Wetzlar my whole life as I grew up just a couple of miles from there. Wetzlar has changed since I was a kid but it still has its charm. Best place is the "Altstadt" and the area around the Lahnufer.

Wetzlar is a gorgeous old town with loads of history. There is a beautiful park along both sides of the river and activities such as canoeing available. Plenty of restaurants and beer gardens by the old bridge. I was only there one evening but wished I had longer!

The city is broken into 2 areas, the old city which is roughly 5 to 10 min away by car. and the new city which is roughly 10 min walk from the hotel. a new shopping center in right across the street from the hotel. If you are going to the old city. ( which is beautiful ). be prepared for a little hike that does go up. The main market square and church are wonderful.

I first went to Wetzlar in 1965 for my 'year abroad' during a modern languages degree course. I have very strong personal attachments to the place, which prejudice me strongly in its favour. The situation of the old town rising up to the (quirkily unfinished) cathedral above the old stone bridge over the River Lahn is very picturesque. Objectively, the way to enjoy Wetzlar for the average tourist would probably be to wander around in the old town (definitely on foot) and peek in at the cathedral and one or two the small museums). It helps to be interested in Goethe and his early best-seller (the Sorrow of Young) Werther. Wetzlar is also the home of the Leitz factory that makes Leica cameras. I haven't been around the optics & Leica museums ... as far as the culinary scene is concerned my verdict on the basis of recent visits is that if all the Italians went home, the Germans would starve. I don't have young children any more, alas, and am rapidly raching the stage of not having young grandchildren either, so you'll have to ask Google about that!

Wetzlar is a beautiful town, like stepping back in time even though there is a modern city with wonderful shopping precinct. The old meets the new. The Wetzlar City Hotel was a great place to stay as it was close to the train & bus station. It was very clean, the breakfast was excellent and staff were very friendly and helpful. Walking around the town was also easy. Braunfels Castle was only a short bus drive away, well worth a visit.
We stayed at Pension Domblick for one night as we drove across Europe, but we would have liked to have stayed longer! The property is situated right by parkland near the river and it is so quiet and peaceful. The town of Wetzlar is gorgeous and there's loads to see and do there and plenty of good restaurants. We didn't have time to go in the swimming pool but it looked wonderful. We slept so well, thanks to the quiet and the comfy bed. Breakfast was buffet style and there was loads of choice and plenty of everything.
The restaurant Bull & Bonito offers fresh dishes - the menu is just perfect - and try their white wines! Breakfast: everyone can find the preferred breakfast. I loved my room - 25qm perfectly organized. The hotel is located in Wetzlar - not the best looking place near Frankfurt, but the Leica site, the beautiful hotel and the kind, super service-oriented personnel make up for everything else. Visit the Leica Museum - it's interesting.
