Although checkin was listed as 3.00 pm, we arrived early and were allowed access to our room. This was particularly appreciated as we were travelling by bike and it had been a rainy day. Our twin room was a decent size with a small adjacent anti room containing a sofa. Breakfast was the usual continental style and was adequate. A large garage was available to store our bikes and, although the door was not locked, we were able to adequately secure the bikes. The train station is right across the road and there is a supermarket only minutes away.

We loved this hotel - the staff who run it are so welcoming and friendly. The hotel is a very short walk to the old historic town as well as a few excellent local restaurants.
Not that we used it but the hotel had an honesty system for the snacks and drinks available throughout your stay. The generous continental breakfast which included scrambled eggs, sausage and bacon was sumptuous.
The test of a good hotel - would we stay here again - absolutely yes.

Hocher Hotel stands in the Medieval centre of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, a 5-minute walk from the town hall. Hocher Hotel is a non-smoking hotel. All rooms include cable TV and a private bathroom.
The half-timbered buildings, cobbled streets and brightly painted façades of medieval Rothenburg ob der Tauber wouldn’t be out of place in a fairytale. Several fantastical films have been set in this gem on the scenic Romantic Road, passing from Würzburg to Füssen via Bavaria’s most enchanting towns.
Uniquely designed gates allow access to the historic centre through walls partly covered with tiled roofs. Walking along the walls offers a different perspective of the town’s colourful flowers, step gables and towers. The town hall has the tallest tower, whose far-reaching views include the large Marktplatz, home of the Christmas market. The Christmas Museum is a year-round winter wonderland, as is the shop of Käthe Wohlfahrt, the internationally renowned German Christmas decoration producer.
On a different note, the Crime Museum houses medieval torture instruments including a ducking stool. Holy Blood and Last Supper altarpieces form the focal point of towering St James’ Church, a stop on the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route.
In the River Tauber valley outside the centre are lush gardens, one containing Toppler Castle, a bizarre structure resembling a house on a tower. Also in the valley is a double-arched stone bridge.

From U.S.A. traveling father with two college age daughters.
From U.S.A. traveling father with two college age daughters. Sights and scenery were terrific. Hotel Sonne owners were so very nice. Two days was plenty. We did not feel very welcome at most of the dinner or drink restaurants we visited unfortunately. Food was great, but felt like they didn't really want us there. Maybe it's just different service than we are used to in U.S. because of no expected tipping. Christmas museum was not worth the price.

The town itself is really a great example of a medieval walled town. Getting to walk the walls, look inside the old churches, and eat/stay in local establishments adds to the experience. The topper for us was the added bonus of a festival occurring during our visit!

Rothenburg ob der Tauber has met my expectations of cute, romantic well preserved medieval town , loved the historic museum of the torture , learned lot of things there , definitely loved that we stayed for couple nights unlike most of tourists come only for a day.
We loved walking around the fortress where we took great photos and explored some of the insides too.
Walking around is easy coz everything is very near.
I can highly recommend Zur Holle Restaurant, lovely staff and food.
Highly recommend this town to every travellers and especially those who love history.
I would definitely come back again.

Beautiful town and we were very happy we included it on our tour. Walking the wall was a great experience but you really don't have to walk the whole thing. We were there in the shoulder season, March, and pretty much nothing opened, shops & museums, until 2pm when the tour busses arrived. We specifically stayed overnight because of advice to be there without "hordes" of tourists and to see the town lit up. Problem was that there isn't any exterior lighting and we had the town pretty much to ourselves all morning. When the tour busses leave it turns into a ghost town. Shops close, which are all cheap tourist shops and not interesting anyway. Also, we had an extremely difficult time finding a place for dinner. There aren't many restaurants and because of that reservations are required. Happy we saw the town but spending six hours would have been enough.

Old town is the place to be.
Old town is the place to be. Beautiful architecture, history and it really feels like you are in Pinocchio’s fairytale village. Worth visiting and you don’t need more than 2-3 nights to fully explore it. And you can walk everywhere.

We stayed three nights and spent 2-1/2 days in the old town.
We stayed three nights and spent 2-1/2 days in the old town. We’ve been here many times but there’s plenty to see and do. We recommend the Rothenberger Handworker’s house tour, an ancient house unchanged since the 1700s, St Jakob’s church, the criminal museum, the night watchman’s tour, and walking the town’s perimeter walls and towers. These help illustrate medieval life and how people lived back then, and how good we have it today!

Really comfortable room (bed, space, bathroom) and superb experience overall. Staff was attentive, helpful and sympathetic. Location can barely be any better as this is in the heart of altstadt.
The hotel restaurant is incredible! I enjoyed the most delicious schäufelle in Germany there. I also definitely recommend the local sparkling wine. The apfel strudel was a work of art. Nice and polite staff there as well.
The breakfast was good. Not hugely varietied but with all the basics for all tastes, with tasty local products as well.
The location was quite remote for walking around, but closeby to Rothenburg ob der Tauber. The hotel has a long tradition which can be seen in the breakfast room. Our room was in a separate building and was very spacious. Breakfast was nice and is highly recommended. The cancellation policy (which we didn't use) is one of the best I have seen.
Just one night's stay but everything was very good. Staff very pleasant and helpful, breakfast with eggs made to order and otherwise standard selection. Location excellent with parking adjacent to the hotel.
Rothenburg ob der tauber is such a beautiful place worth seeing. The hotel personnel is very friendly. The room is very clean. The hotel restaurant offers good local food as well.
