Comfy stay. However, after staying a few nights in the best suite, we hoped the staff would be more helpful when our rental bike was stolen. Instead now they have sent us the full charges without even slight compensation or offer to find a solution. I expect to pay for the lost bike but also hoped guest services would be more accommodating in this situation.

Potsdam holds a pivotal place in German history. The country’s largest UNESCO World Heritage Site – Park Sanssouci – stands testament to the wealth of the kings and kaisers who once held court there. Yellow Sanssouci Palace is somewhat overshadowed by stepped gardens leading up to it from a fountain. A long path leads off at a right angle to the red-coloured New Palace, adorned with statues and a green dome.

Potsdam is a work in progress. The town center suffered ariel bombardment in WWII, followed by shoddy post war reconstruction. I visited Potsdam to see the the ongoing restoration work in the town center. The work to date is impressive, and so too are the surrounding parks and palaces, in particular Sanssouci. Sanssouci, in itself, is reason enough to visit Potsdam. I spent several days exploring it at a leisurely pace and enjoyed every minute I spent there.

I have visited many cities in Germany many times. I felt a different and beautiful ambiance in Potsdam. This is a very beautiful city that is clean, decent, and where history and nature are intertwined. If I were to live in Germany, I would prefer this city.

Before I list the pros & cons, it is important to note that this review does not reflect Germany as a whole or other cities in Germany. I have not met Germans from other major cities so I simply cannot compare what I saw; however, my review is based on pure observation, and my intention is not to give a collective opinion about a specific nation.
Pros: The city is very clean and organized, hospitals are all over the place, and finally the stores, restaurants, and shopping areas are great.
Cons: You have to understand that this city is not for tourists at all. It is crystal clear that it's full of locals and it will be very rare to see any tourists around. The locals (who made it clear to us on several occasions are not in need of tourism), many of them see visiting tourists as a burden and not a blessing. Mid-aged to old Germans are non-English speakers, and young Germans are (it's fascinating how a full generation knows one language and the other doesn't). If you stop someone on the street to help you out, they rarely will go out of their way to do so. Germans lead private lives, it is an individualistic culture, and they get paid high wages so do not expect them to want tourists anywhere around their cities and neighborhoods. It is also clear that the majority do not care what type of impression international travelers have about their country. They see themselves self self-sufficient and that is the most polite way I can summarize my visit.

The park is lovely to wander around, with grand palaces, beautiful gardens and art galleries to visit. The town centre and Dutch Quarter are worth visiting and also the Cecilienhof where the Potsdam Conference is definitely worth seeing.

Lots to see and historically all very interesting with beautiful palaces. Plenty of restaurants/ cafes and shops to wander about. The centre is flat and manageable. The Potsdam bus is a good way to see it and get around.
Staying in Potsdam has a more relaxing ambience than Berlin, but a day trip to Berlin and the hop on/ off bus there is within easy reach, if you research the links beforehand.
Hotel Am Jägertor is a luxury hotel in an excellent historic location in Potsdam. This hotel probably has the kindest staff ever and you really feel welcomed during your stay. The minibar for guests personal use in the room and the coffee machine with two kinds of coffee available was really awesome. I strongly recommend this hotel.
I stayed in this hotel for two nights. This hotel is accessible to Potsdam Hbf by bus in 10 min. I had a big checkin bag with me and I could take it easily to the hotel by public transport and a little walk over 100 . Most of the. rooms are accessible by lift. Breakfast was good.
The selection of the breakfast was very good, above the general average in Germany. The receptionist was friendly and I got the room already well before the official check-in time. The room was OK and clean, nothing to complain about. Excellent situation for my purpose.
The room was very spacious and clean. It’s in a rather modern part of Potsdam so don’t expect exceptional views, but the tram station is very close to the hotel so reaching the city center isn’t difficult.
