Political centre and favourite residence of Charlemagne, Aachen is located in Germany’s North Rhine-Westphalia region. A spa town since Ancient Roman times, it has some of the hottest springs in Europe. Its Old Town keeps important architectonic jewels, such as the Cathedral ordered by Charlemagne in 786, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
With a unique mix of styles, the Cathedral is the final resting place for Charlemagne’s remains, and served as coronation church for 30 German kings and 12 queens. Guest houses and hotels in Aachen’s historic centre are a romantic way of enjoying the city.
The RWTH University is one of the country’s ‘Universities of Excellence’, part of the technologic profile of a city that is regarded as one of the most innovative in Germany. In fact, a large number of Aachen hotels have congress facilities.
It is located 65 km from Cologne and 40 km from Maastricht/Aachen Airport. Connections to major European capitals are available from the central railway station, while several hotels nearby will help you to avoid the last-minute rush.
Whether you want to relax in the baths or come to town for a lecture, don’t miss the Aachen accommodation deals available on Booking.com!

Aachen seemed quite quiet, We visited on Sunday, stayed until Tuesday morning. Town Hall interesting, but I mainly wanted to find out about Charlemagne. The museum was closed on Monday (they all are!) and the museum, when we did visit on Tuesday am was disappointing. Very little on Charlemagne or the Holy Roman Empire, but a lot of Aachen history. Still a very pleasant town to visit and small enough to be managed in a day or two. Good restaurants.

This ancient city has both an old and modern district running around the centre. Not as medieval as I had imagined but the old town is worth a wander around. Lots of curb-side bar's cafe's and restaurants. However, walk 5 minuets in any direction from the centre and you are met with the seedier parts of town! I don't think I would make Aachen my final holiday or city break destination but its a good stopping off or overnight point on a long journey.

Aachen's cathedral and its treasury are a European must-see!
Aachen's cathedral and its treasury are a European must-see! Not very big, but extraordinary, the architecture (the heart being octagonal and painted in Byzantine style) unlike most cathedrals. The town centre is charming, as far as the medieval houses are concerned. Unfortunately, the old centre is mixed with after-war-architecture (WW II took its toll, I guess), which makes the rest of the centre not really a must if you intend to discover beautiful Germany. But for the sake of the cathedral (take a guided tour to see the throne and the tomb of Charlemagne) and the treasury, a stop-over in Aachen for one or two days is highly recommended.
