TCHAN LOVe, hotel in Portela

TCHAN LOVe is a recently renovated bed and breakfast in Portela, where guests can make the most of its garden and terrace. There is an in-house restaurant and free private parking.

This is a very nice place to stay for couple nights. Quiet, comfortable. Breakfast was included and I have asked for it at 6am, so the Lady just left it from the evening (coffee in a termopot). Also you can ask for a dinner, which is really good, super tasty (Ive got a fish with rice and veggies for 900 escudo). And also you can ask for some wine (industrial or craft homemade, about 200 per glass). The place has not many reviews but it's seems super new, means you will have also super new bathroom which is nice bonus for staying. As for the transfer: you can book the place in Alluger with the room booking. The way from Sao Filipi is 50-60 mins and costs 1000 escudo. As for the trekking: 1. The location is the best, right next to the start of few trekking routes 2. You can ask the owner for a guide, just ask for someone local who is actually based here in Caldeiras and not in Sao Filipe. As for the Pico Grande you will definitely need a guide because it's super tricky route. For the Pico Grande the usual price is 6000 per person but it's could be a discount if you are in group 3. Also you can walk by yourself (without guide) for couple places: e.g Pico Pequeno (it's now that far) and also you can walk to the Forest Monte Velha (about 5 kms till the entrance to the Forest) or even to Mosteiros (about 16 kms in total, 10 kms at the normal road and 6 kms are a bit difficult, inside the forest - not the easiest trail but it's possible)

EcoFunco, hotel in Portela

EcoFunco is situated in Portela. The accommodation features a 24-hour front desk and parking on-site. At the bed and breakfast, every unit is fitted with a wardrobe.

Beautiful Funco house. Spotlessly clean. Bed comfortable. Perfect location for hiking the volcano. Owners are very friendly and helpful. Card payment accepted (+2%). Breakfast delivered night before for hiking was basic but ideal for the hike. Reasonable requirements for power and water consumption, given the location.

Portela is a magnific place inside a Vulcano crater, i just wanted to stay longer.... you can see the volcano all the time, such magnific view. People are umble and welcome, vilage quiet and great if you travel with kids as they can just go free. There is so much to do if you love geology and treking, such as hile the big vulcano and/or smalers, hike trough lava fillds, explore caves... but also vias ferratas and long trails, you can also go down hiking to mosteiros trough cofe fields (you can arrange it for someone to take yous big bags downs and catch you on the road at the end of the cofe fields to take you to the boat to Praia). The vilage is small and easy to go around, by night there is no much light outside better bring a headlamp. The food is all home made and delicios, we eat in Sonia and Ze house (sweet chiken, beans), Helena (cachupa and omlet) and Isabela (stuwe pig, fish with cream). we had a 4yo and we mostly hiked with him on the backpack, some parts he would go on his foot... things he loved running down the sand hills (big vulcano and small vulcano separated), walk trough the lava fields and sand, draw on sand, play with local kids.

This location and guest house is not about fluffy pillows nor spa facilities. It's for adventure, it's at the top of a volcano and has limited resources, though with that, the guest house team is VERY accommodating. Meals were delicious, books and games were provided to pass time in the quiet evenings. The surrounding community experience is WONDERFUL. Highly recommend.

Lovely little village. The locals are so nice.

Lovely little village. The locals are so nice. Please go eat at Isabel’s restaurant. Fresh and great food (if you are vegetarian owner can make you an amazing omelette with onion, green peppers and tomato and it includes on the side potatoes and pumpkin and carrots and rice) and the best part is that the owner is such a lovely person. If you get to know her even a little bit, you will love her. The volcano hike is a must!
