We stayed at Hotel Diria for two nights...we came straight from the Liberia Airport. Santa Cruz is not a tourist destination, we chose it because it was only an hour from the airport and we wanted a hotel within a half hour of the wonderful Palo Verde boat tour in Ortega and our fantastic visit to the traditional pottery community of Guaitil. The rooms are basic and clean. The grounds are beautiful, the people are friendly and they serve a very good breakfast. There was a good restaurant (La Terraza) a block away. A tranquil setting in a busy town.

The town adjacent to the hotel was pleasant and there was a very nice restaurant about 50 metres from the hotel. This isn't really a tourist orientated place. But the locals are friendly and welcoming, and it does seem representative of the real Costa Rica. As opposed to the more touristy parts of Costa Rica. Beware very few English speaking locals, though with apps on smart phones it is possible to make yourself understood if you have no spanish.
