I would consider the restaurant food Micheline star rating worthy. Great mountain ambiance with tons of butterflies and rare exotic birds. Highly recommend taking a horse tour with the kind guide who will take you to a secluded waterfall and river crossings all on horseback.

Our cabin was clean, cute and comfy, in a beautiful location with a view of the river. We loved that it was spacious, with a couch, table and chairs. The bathroom was very nice, and we very much appreciated the nice, hot shower (after so many places we stayed at in CR had cold showers). We enjoyed walking through the botanical garden, too. Breakfast was amazing, all 4 of us were happy with our food and were pleasantly surprised by the warmed/frothed milk that was served with our coffees!

The hotel is located in heavily wooded area with a lot of birds and wildlife. My wife wanted to shoot a bird called Quetzal. She had read that this property had a few Quetzals in the woods nearby. They are shy birds so they are very hard to spot. The host did help my wife to find one bird high up in the tree. Earlier that day, my wife went with another guide to spot some Quetzals, so she had a few good pictures. There is a good restaurant within a short driving distance from the property. They serve good meals at reasonable prices.

It's a cabin in the mountain. Good restaurant and fantastic point in the terrasse for birds observatory.
This place is a bird-lover's paradise! And it's nice to feel cold sometimes in an otherwise warm, tropical country. Everyone is very nice, and very nature-oriented. The trees are all primary growth and fascinating and beautiful to see. This is one of my favorite places in Costa Rica (so far).

A magical valley, surrounded by an inimaginable amount of flora and fauna. Still a quiet place, with no massive tourism activity yet, greenery is what you will see the most. The Savegre river is astonishing, and its sound is like the perfect match to the landscape. If you are looking for a mountain/forest destination while you are here in Costa Rica, I will recommend San Gerardo de Dota.

The Quetzal valley has its own micro-climate, so its actually a lot colder and less humid than the rest of Costa Rica. You can walk everywhere, it's super safe and the river rushes near the street across some beautiful forest areas, there's no way you don't detox from city vibes in this place. The restaurants Lauraceas and Alma de Arbol are excellent, with super friendly waiters, modern menus and accesible prices. Los Lagos cabins have an awesome mountain view and are near the river, offer an excellent breakfast and are right in the centre of the valley. Bring appropriate clothing -preferably waterproof and with good hiking shoes so you get the most out of your stay regardless of the weather.

Birders paradise.
Birders paradise. This is the best place to see quetzal birds. 1 full day is enough. You must be here for a 5.30am quetzal birding tour if you want to see the quetzals. Cool- about 50° at night, 62-70° during the day.

San Gerardo de Dota has the perfect weather, it's also a very small community. Might need a bit more night life I suppose, but it's not a big deal.
Make sure you bring sunblock and warm clothes for the nights.

The hotel is quite large, with a good restaurant and friendly staff. The location is ideal for bird watching in Los Quetzales National Park. The room in a double bungalow was very clean and well furnished, the balcony overlooking the pond was very nice. To get acclimated there are a few hiking trails that start right at the hotel, the pristine scenery is breathtaking. Not to be underestimated is the cool climate due to the altitude of San Gerardo (over 2000 m), in March at night 8-12 ° C and during the day for hiking very pleasant 15-20 ° C.
The hotel was more than we expected. We were in awe of the scenery. Magistic views that connect your inner with the world.
We were a family group of 10. Out of the three rooms we rented, the best was the #14 with an amazing deck and lovely mountain sight (and a great bathroom).
The staff was really nice and helpful.
Driving through the Panamerican Highway and going down San Gerardo de Dota is one of the best trips you can take in Costa Rica.
But overall, Rio Saavegre is a true star. It's a must.
The Hotel facilities are absolutely beautiful and the service was incredible. Greivin, the manager was super helpful upon check in and also guided us on a really cool Quetzal watching tour.
The hotel offers a really nice breakfast in a beautiful dining hall, and also the interior design of the common areas is tastefully selected. We enjoyed a nice round of Billiard while having coffee and beers, and enjoying the cozy fire next to us. The staff really helps make your stay as pleasant as possible.
Brilliant hotel especially if you are into birds especially if you want to see a Quetzal. Rooms were great. Breakfast was fantastic. The guide (part of the family) was knowledgeable, kind and informative. Great trials direct from the hotel. Possibly the best hotel during our 3 week stay in Costa Rica.
