There's a restaurant connected to the hotel. I like how quiet it was, I like that there's a terrace going around the whole hotel and that you can lie in the hammock, hear the river and look out on the ocean.

This is basically a cruse ship harbor and not much to do in low season. A few bars and stores open. A lot of tour is not given due to no crusie ship arriving in this time of the year. Also, extreme weather resultet in that most tours from Puntarenas was cancelled.
If you are planning a vaccation, you should choose another city such as Jaco or Uvita. Very easy to take a 2-3 hour bus shuttle from San Jose, terminal 7-10 for a few dollars.

Very run down.
Very run down. We went passed the local prison 2 roads away from place we had originally booked. No trees,no green, just run down building with barb wires and high gates, corrugated iron....not nice, avoid.

While the hotel and staff were lovely and helpful the common verandah didn't allow for much privacy. The hotel was also at least 5kms from the rest of the town with no shops or restaurants nearby, so a little isolated. But the beach just across the road was a bonus.

Plenty of restaurants, activities to explore, etc.
Plenty of restaurants, activities to explore, etc. For me, It totally depends on your hotel. I’ve stayed in Puntarenas many times, but my trip this week to Hotel Puntarenas Beach was, sadly, my worst hotel experience in Puntarenas.

it is a very nice and calm hotel, with a small pool, where you can enjoy the evening in front of you room. Very nicely decorated. An open lobby and reception, providing free coffee and tea all day long. Very friendly and helpful staff. Private parking space and very close the the ferries to Nicoya peninsula.
Comfy beds. Nice located next to the bus station. It's a restaurant and hotel together. You check in inside the restaurant. Owners are kind. Only Spanish speaking. You can have also a breakfast at the restaurant.
Place around isn't nice. It's dirty there and stinking. Stay just one night there for the ferry.
Everything here was first rate. Totally unexpected. In our dozens of trips to Costa Rica, we never had any desire to stay in the Puntarenas area. Due to the logistics on this trip, we found ourselves in the area. What a find! Hotel Cayuga was an oasis.
Very good for a short stay. The hosts are very kind and helpful. Viktor also speaks a bit English. Kitchen had everything you needed. Common space is nice and everything is clean.
Puntarenas is busy on weekends (only locals) and quiet during the week.
