The hotel is built within a beautifully restored old Chinese-style courtyard, giving it a lot of character and charm. It felt like stepping into a piece of history, which was one of the highlights of the stay. The room was cozy and the bed was comfortable, equipped with an electric warmer that helped keep things toasty, especially during the cooler evenings. Breakfast was provided, and the auntie serving/cooking was very nice and made such a great mixian! The hotel is located in the ancient town which is convenient but would need to reach out to hotel to make arrangements for bringing the luggage because vehicles can't enter the ancient town

Dali is so touristy, loud, tacky and packed. Utterly horrible. We walked for 30 minutes at night to find somewhere to eat and then gave up and went to bed with no dinner. It was beautiful in the morning when we left. The restaurants and shops were shut and it was peaceful with fabulous view of the mountains. The shops are touristy and sell the usual stuff.

Stayed in Dali Ancient Town at the Hidden Hotel.
Stayed in Dali Ancient Town at the Hidden Hotel. Excellent spot in a very lively and authentic Ancient Town that comes alive every night. Plenty of choices for food, drink and entertainment. Never a dull moment, but it is China and everyone was well behaved !
High Speed Train to Kunming and Lijiang is fast and first class.
Great time was had and the Three Pagodas were pretty cool.
As usual in China, taxis were cheap and plentiful.

Dali Ancient City is a big city, can take 45 minutes to walk across. It is also extremely busy and very noisy (August). Traffic is horrendous, On arrival the taxi could have got withing 5 minutes walk of our hotel, but stationary traffic meant we opted to walk 40 minutes. Pedestrianised streets still have electric scooters charging through the crowds.
There are many nearby attractions, but information for planning trips is scarce, and in any case you have to wait ages for a taxi then sit in traffic.
If you want a relaxing Ancient City experience, go to nearby Weishan!

There are so many experience waitng for explore in Dali.
There are so many experience waitng for explore in Dali. But the traffic management is so poor inside and outside the old town. Inside the old town, the tourists have to walk away from the electric motorbike and the tricycle all time. Moreover some private car can enter the old town easily. Outside the old town there was an accident by two car crashing but it can make more than a kilo traffic jam. But I haven't seen any policeman. So if you want to explore Dali please carefully concern the transportation.

The old town was a disappointing tourist trap - shop after shop selling the same things, people standing in the street touting for business etc. Same shops as in Lijiang and, to a lesser extent, Shangri-La. No diversity in food or shops - same same wherever you go in those three towns. Don't bother to visit all three places - pick one only.
The Lake was interesting but we hired a scooter from Dali only to realise that we couldn't get onto the scooter track that runs around the lake - you have to hire the scooters that are already on the track if you want to scooter around the lake. Bit annoying.

Dali has got the mountains, got the sea (a very large lake), got the sun, has history, the really old establishments, the new variations, great coffee, great tea, spicy food, and local delicacy... what's not to like?
People in Dali must be some of the most welcoming. They were calm, they were friendly, they were helpful. Relatively affordable comparing to other popular tourist towns. Could easily live there for another month. Miss the place already!
