I had a one-night stopover en route to the mountains. It’s basic but clean, comfortable and very well situated by the lake and close to the railway station, with wonderful views. Excellent value for money. The lady on reception was very friendly and welcoming. I had a great pizza in the restaurant downstairs.

The apartment was in a good location only a short walk to town and grocery store. The building had a lift which is very helpful. A good bus service only 2 minutes walk. A reasonable size apartment for a short stay.

Surrounded by Lake Geneva and glorious Alpine peaks, tranquil Montreux has enchanted artistes through the ages. Lord Byron was so inspired by the style and setting of waterfront Château de Chillon that he wrote a poem about it. Nowadays it is one of Switzerland’s most popular attractions.
Freddie Mercury also fell in love with Montreux and a lakefront statue in Place du Marché commemorates this former resident in typical pose, with one arm raised to the heavens. Queen fans flock here for the annual Memorial Day, just one musical festival hosted by this town. The most famous is the 2-week Montreux Jazz Festival, held in the Music & Convention Centre.
On the opposite side of town is Audiorama (the Swiss National Audiovisual Museum), near a funicular railway which climbs the hill. Further up the slopes is the family-friendly Rochers-de-Naye ski area, while the Les Pléiades pistes overlook neighbouring Vevey. Down at the quayside wooden chalets house stalls of the annual Christmas market.
Summer activities include boat trips, hiking and the Montreux-Oberland-Bernois narrow gauge railway whose trains allow you to really savour the views…and a nice cup of coffee.
The train station also connects to Geneva, site of the nearest airport, and Booking.com offers luxury hotels, apartments with views and cheap B&Bs nearby.

People with money create a unique atmosphere in the city: for example, until 2 o'clock in the morning you can't close your eyes - convertibles with a price of 100K are driving through the streets with music so loud that no soundproofing helps. I will not say that I would like to live there. But sometimes such a vibe can even be liked.

We were impressed with the lakeside esplanade which seemed popular with everyone, tourists and locals alike. We enjoyed the iconic statue of Freddie Mercury and really appreciated the Queen Experience within the casino, free at point of entry and really well assembled…lots of interest…we had the best part of two hours there! We ate crepes and had coffee at the Eden Palace hotel…a light bite after the enormous breakfast we’d been served at the Victoria Glion. We appreciated the gardens along the front, well kept and with a large diversity of ‘Mediterranean’ plants and trees. We might suggest that the authorities consider putting plaques on the trees with their Latin names…we were curious as to several and what they were, but had no guide to help us here. This could presumably be done at limited cost and be wonderfully ‘educational’ to the masses!

Montreux is situated in an area surrounded by mountains which were snow capped when we were there and the lake views are beautiful. Chillon Castle and the Freddy Mercury Statue are worth a visit but make sure you allow enough time for the Castle visit as there is so much to see. Walking around Montreux is easy, there is a good bus service and the train station is right in town upper level. Plenty of good restaurants to eat at and they are open till late evening.

Stunning location.
Stunning location. Lots of walking paths along lakeside with ‘view seats’ scattered along the routes. Various methods of getting up the mountains (rack railways etc) and excellent buses running everywhere (free with a pass from my hotel). Boat trips around Lake Geneva with opportunities to disembark to look round other lakeside villages.

I went to Montreux specifically for the Freddie Mercury celebration days but quickly fell in love with it. The entire area is stunning and everything feels so relaxed.
I had heard it was a bit expensive but I found it pretty equal to any other capital I have visited although beer is expensive in bars - around 9.90 CHF for a pint on average.
Eating out was comparable to most places I have visited and there are some fabulous eateries.
It is a very easy city to get around on foot although there are also excellent public transport links.
The public transport from Montreux is excellent meaning you can also explore surrounding areas. I travelled into Vevey one day - 40 minutes on the bus - to visit Chaplin's World, a museum dedicated to Charlie Chaplin. It is extremely easy to spend a day in these areas thanks to the excellent transport links. (I also would thoroughly recommend Chaplin's World.
With such stunning scenery and such a chilled way of life it is easy to see why people fall in love with Montreux and never leave.

A very nice hotel. The room and facilities are brilliant. The bus stops outside, 4 min and you are by the lake. The hotel gives a pass which includes free public transport and 50% off all attractions. There is a good restaurant about 2 min walk. Generally love Montreux and this hotel was a lovely place to stay. Would love to come back
Well I arrived to find the hotel was closed. However the owners also owned the Plaza Palace opposite and we were upgraded. So we got a 5 star hotel at 2 star rates. This was amazing but my comments about the Palace Plaza Montreux being all top marks is correct. Amazing
hotel splendid is in the most exceptional location one the lakefront and has stupendous views. I was here for montreux Noel and it was directly outside the most vibrant section. staff were so friendly and helpful and a divine breakfast. I will stay here again
The hotel was centrally located for walking into town and seeing Montreux. The breakfast was great. The staff was very friendly and they had a washing machine and dryer! Very clean.
