Rooms old.-fashioned of course(founded 1870) furnishings, finishings crisp and clean and no signs of wear. Very well maintained throughout. Beautiful setting on the lakeshore and with the outdoor hot tub and saunas a great and relaxing Christmas getaway.

We visited the Windermere because we had booked a nearby (i.e., 30 mins away) night skate at Muskoka Lakes Farm and Winery. There isn't much to do in the nearby towns (during the winter), unless you have an activity pre-booked, and a car is required to visit the Muskokas; however, the Windemere has a lot onsite (outdoor hot tub and pool, private saunas, fire pits, casual (a pub) and more sophisticated dining (7-course tasting menu), and natural scenery, including lake views and deer visitors. The hotel also left us little thoughtful treats for our special visit. We will definitely return.

Windermere is such a beautiful part of muskoka.

Windermere is such a beautiful part of muskoka. It was an amazing experience and I would definitely come again, with the condition of picking a different resort to stay in! (We stayed in The New Baldwins Resort) The roads are nice during the day and the scenery is beautiful if you use cruise down the bends. We had lunch once at the Windermere House which was wonderful!

The location and staff were excellent.

The location and staff were excellent. Bookimg.com did not specify that the room was on the second floor. I use an assisted walking device and could not manage carrying the luggage to the second floor, The staff were very helpful in that they found us a ground floor room and bent over backwards to help us move there and not have to move a second time.

Port Carling is a small and quaint town near by with antique shops and restaurants. Most are closed Monday and Tuesday, will not travel on these days again, finding breakfast was a sad and hungry affair. We had a good lunch at Turtle Jack but it closed next day for the season. The town has some scenic hikes near by, perfect for fall leaves watching.
