Barreirinhas improved since 2022, however the city is really ugly. High season everything was overpriced. You do get whatever you need, but will pay top dollars for poor quality stuff. Food was ok, everywhere but very expensive. taxis were super priced . And the city is not a walkable city. Dirty and service, for such a touristic area is very poor.
However , the Park is so beautiful that is worthy the pain of the city.
People are very sweet , and kind, but not properly trained.

We stayed 1 night. Purpose was to see the National Park, Lencois Maranhenses. We were advised to go to Atins or Santo Amaro instead of staying all the time in Barreirinhas as they are nicer and I would second that. It is a good base for tours and transfers to see the park.

The tours are all the same.
The tours are all the same. They drive like maniacs on bumpy roads. It is not fun for everyone and especially unnerving and tiring you have already spent half of day trekking, or then to have a very uncomfortable ride is tiresome and infantile. It should not be imposed on all visitors. That’s what are quads for and other extreme forms of transportation on sand. Also no one spoke a word of English. More guides should be trained and companies should offer visitors a choice of joining a group where the guide speaks some English. All of this on the top of a very tiresome bumpy ride from the airport. I feel like my body was shaken to the bones in the last 24 hours. And for what? To experience the serene nature of dunes and lakes the rough driving should not be mandatory but optional.

All of the development and movement in the city is...
All of the development and movement in the city is concentrated in the city center which has a few nice shops and good restaurants. Other than that, the rest of the city lacks infrastructure - unfortunately, a lot of roads are unpaved and without public lighting.

Small town with little shops, pharmacies and restaurants. Communication is close to impossible there as the residents do not speak a word of English. It gets pretty tiring. Thank god for google translate. The roads are in bad shape if you rented a vehicle, look out for extremely high speed bumps and pot holes. Mosquitos everywhere! Basically, not much to do. A point of interest only because of the Lençóis dunes.

We highly recommend this hotel, we stayed in November off season and it was very peaceful and quiet, on most days we had a pool and outdoor restaurant all to ourselves.
The whole of territory is secure, the actual room small but cosy, we had a balcony with the view over the palm trees and amazing pink sky over them during sunset.
The breakfast was excellent with lots of variety and many exotic fruit!
If we ever come back to this area we’ll stay here again.
Own river access. Awesome homemade Brazilian style breakfast in good company with the family. Adorable staff and very helpful owners. If you like non-hotel stylized pousadas the original Brazilian way, this is the place.
Lovely peaceful hotel, really nice staff. The rooms were spacious and clean and the food from the restaurant was good. Would 100% recommend.
It is however about a 20 minute walk into town but that didn’t bother us.
Lovely, cosy hotel in a great location in Barreirinhas - just two blocks from the river and restaurants. Staff were friendly and helpful. Room were cosy and spacious and hammocks were great to relax in.
