The townspeople were recovering from a major power outage that had affected businesses badly but were friendly, caring and offering the best they could to travellers. The town itself is a gateway to the Flinders Ranges, but it offers its own tourism - Jeff Morgan Gallery, the local seismograph and interesting fossil artefacts, a beautiful RSL area, a local pool and good eateries, which may or may not be consistent in quality, as the pub had just had the cook walk out ( we avoided) and the Old Ghan restaurant's chef was unwell - the meal was passable, but not brilliant. The local cafe and new eatery were excellent. Fuel is expensive due to transport costs. Lovely church folk.

Hawker is a perfect base to use for exploring the environs of the Flinders Rangers. Hawker itself offers points of interest, is well serviced with basics such as fuel, workshop, groceries, cafes and eateries with the bonus of medical facilities in town.

Jeff Morgan's panorama gallery is a must see.

Jeff Morgan's panorama gallery is a must see. Hawker Hotel meals are good value. A modern cafe in town does breakfasts and lunches. It's easy to get around this small outback town which has a grid pattern street plan and almost no actual traffic.

The town of Hawker provided us with a nice retreat after our fairly active daytime outings. The drive from Hawker to Wilpena Pound and Blinman and return is enjoyable, the scenery is superb. The pub has a good atmosphere and the food is good quality. Food service was slow when they were unexpectedly inundated with customers.
