Gateway to the Kimberleys, Horizontal Falls and the Gibb...
Gateway to the Kimberleys, Horizontal Falls and the Gibb River road 4WD only but gives access to Windjana, Bell, Lenard Gorges, Tunnel Creek, Manning and Mitchell Falls and El Questro. Best when graded, otherwise very rough. Derby is a small town, has a walking track to the wharf and back. Accommodation options are the Derby Lodge, Spinifex or the two caravan parks. Rodeo and camp draft was good fun. Jila cafe, great cakes and food. The bakery does sushi and great pies. Neaps at the Derby Lodge, great breakfast and have a cocktails at 5:00. King tide at full moon. Book shop lots of interesting choices, busy little place. All the mechanics, 4WD and tyre places were friendly and very helpful. Boab trees are eveywhere! Very busy in the Dry season, not so many tourists in the Wet.

Checked out big tides at Jetty and sunset, this seemed to be popular thing to do. There is a sealed bike path from the town to jetty which is popular, it is about 2.5 k one way.
Viewed prison tree and heritage walk around town with panels to read. Go to visitor centre it is full of great information.

Derby is a hidden gem with some history to explore.
Derby is a hidden gem with some history to explore. Would recommend to take the 30 km trip there from the main road turn off -just to see the 1500 year old boab tree - if nothing else. Has port and military history also.

Derby is a grand Lady of a Town. She has all
that is required of a traveller. Clean place with lots to see and do. The Wharf is incredible with it’s huge tides. Beautiful sunsets. Great restaurants.
The hotel is not open on Sunday and Monday which I did not find out until I arrived. They owned another property which was open. On arrival, I was early, there was no way to contract the property until the bottle shop opened.
Hotel met our expectations. Our room was clean and well kept even though a little older. Laundry facilities were good. Restaurants wasn't open the night we stayed but had a lovely breakfast the next day. Value for money.
Handy part of Derby to stay, particularly good if you have a bike, as nice ride down to the wharf and along the paths to see some great sculptures! Felt safe at the motel. Good café, hotel and restaurant nearby.
