I have been to Dandenong a couple of times and found it to be a nice place to visit but wouldn't stay as it does have it's reputation for a lot of violence.
The hotel I stayed at was in a great spot , access to public transport , the shopping centre is located directly across the road.

A multicultural south eastern suburban township located about 35-40km from the CBD of Melbourne. Either you need a car or be able to afford Uber, otherwise getting around can be a challenge. Daylight vibrancy changes completely to quiet and silent isolation at night. Unless, you are connected night activities are very dismal.

While the hotel itself was fine, and out of the dodgy zone, if you go in to the Dandenong shops there are a lot of people asking for money (which we thought was illegal in Victoria...) and a lot of people seem to be zonked on substances. Sometimes large groups in the park to the south trying to get your attention - a bit intimidating if you're travelling on foot. Some positives - A good Middle-Eastern bread shop in Dandenong with very helpful people. Lots of shops and options, things that are hard to find elsewhere.

The air conditioner, heating and bed was ok.
The air conditioner, heating and bed was ok.
No spare blankets, only 4 sachets of coffee and sugar supplied for 2 nights stay. No phone to front desk. Breakfast was in a plastic box with cereal, milk a little juice , mini muffin and a little piece of yoghurt slice which had to be eaten in their room as no dining space supplied. The room had 1 square plastic stool to sit on which was grubby.otherwise the bed was all they could sit on. No toaster either. There was scuff marks on walls and floor and dusty oil marks on the roof also. The hooks for hanging towels/clothes were also broken
The motel had them sign a security form where there car rego was recorded for security but why do this when my wife returned that night to find a man sleeping in his car and using his phone. In the morning she lifted the blind and there he was in the car still. She was not sure if he was dead or alive as still in same seat of car she took his rego in case he was dead. The day manager then knocked on their door as they had not checked out . The day manager after being told what they saw escorted them to their car as concerned for their safety. At this point the man put his hood on his head to obscure his face.
The site advertised a continental breakfast but the breakfast in a box cost them $9 each .
My wife rang me the first night and said pls do not book this accommodation at this IBIS again.

We had a lovely time in Dandenong and found lots to do
With plenty of shops, markets and a wide variety of restaurants. Dandenong was very central to attractions and an easy drive from the airport.
Would definitely stay again
