I ended up in Defereggen and an evening which I thought would be so-so turned out to be absolutely amazing. Just a few minutes after having booked in with Quotin and Sophie around 2130 o'clock at AURA B&B I was promptly greeted with clear instructions on how to get into the room at such an hour.
When I arrived everything was in order. There was parking available and when I finally enterered my lovely room I was reminded that they said they also ran a restaurant called Kristallkeller, which I discovered was open late. Famished I decided to make the couple of minutes walk over and to my surprise they and their regulars where the most welcoming bunch I have yet to meet on a road trip. The owners speak great english which helped me bridge the language barrier and I felt very welcome.
My only regret is not planning for several days at this place. How could I know it would've been an unforgettable experience!

We loved this hotel and will use it again, the setting was beautiful with fir trees both. Sides of the road. All the essentials are there, large spar supermarket, fuel station which was a very reasonable price. 4 restaurants, one we had lunch in, which we could see and a bank. There are regular buses but we did not use them. Daytime was between 28 - 31 degrees, in the valley it was cooler which made it easier to sleep. The rides out on our motorbike were fantastic. It’s a short trip to Italy with some fantastic twisty winding roads with hairpin bends, we did both passes, you are closed to the Grossglockner from the south a fantastic trip. The Kals am Grossglockner, the water fall on the way, the 5euro road (private road) to Schliederlerhof, twisty, winding, hairpin road and a great lunch at the top. There were many people there walking the trails. Our last trip was to Weissensee (white lake) swimming lake, the on up the mountain to kaiser Franz Josef monument, up to the top and down the other side into Weissbriach for a late lunch. We would not avoid anything is was just very beautiful.

Small mountain village for those who are looking for a calm...
Small mountain village for those who are looking for a calm place to breath, walk and enjoy drinking the fresh water. Very good supermarket (Spar) in the centre, good prices, good products. A nice pizzeria but otherwise it is better to head couple km further from the centre in order to find a good restaurant. Lot of paths for walking (yourself and your dog), biking and just relax.
10 min drive towards a lovely lake of Obersee and about 40 min drive to lively city of Lienz. Beautiful and clean!!!

We all loved our holiday. It was even better than we anticipated. Beautiful wellness area, extra ordinary food plated like a picture....room was good and a lot of walks in the area. Staff was extremely helpful and very friendly. The whole hotel complex has a nice atmosphere
Me and my husband we are vegetarians and it was the first hotel where we did not feel like a nuisance. They offered daily vegetarian meals
The hosts are friendly and always in a good mood. The view is amazing and everything very close. Location is at it's best, no need to leave this small village if you don't want to: shop, e-bike rent, hiking trails, coffee shop, bus stop... Hotel is family friendly - pool, sunbeds, table tennis, volleyball, football, basketball, mini-golf, mini-billiard.
Beds were very comfortable.
the location, the owner, the spa, pool… breakfast. everything was perfect for us. the owner also arranged for us lenses liquid that we forgot. really the small hotels focused on the customers make the difference. this is one great example
