I ended up staying here much longer than expected (due to illness), but I am so happy I did! ALL the staff were wonderful, very friendly and kind and helpful, and the rooms are lovely. Very spacious and bright and comfortable. Perfect location for the centre, and gorgeous views from the pool on the roof. Breakfast was great (remember to ask for eggs!), and the selection of room service was good. (Although it was a bit hit and miss with the main meals). I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here and was sad to leave!

Salta was a pleasant surprise. Unfortunately we were just passing through for 1 day. We just had enough time to do a self guided walk around Plaza 9 de Julio and a couple of blocks either side.
But there was a lot to see and do just at Plaza 9 de Julio alone.
I particularly liked Cabildo Historico (the historical Salta museum) it was free entry and very interesting. The Cathedral on the opposite side of the square is beautifully and ornately decorated inside. MAAM (the museum with the Mummies of Liullaillaco) was fascinating. It's paid entry, but worth it, to see something very unique.
Would have loved to have seen Iglesia Y Museo San Francisco, didn't realise that it shuts between 1230 - 1600. Should have stopped here first when we walked past in the morning on our way to Plaza 9 de Julio.
Also had some lovely epanadas for lunch at Dona Salta.

It has small town feel. Salta itself can be seen in one day.
It has small town feel. Salta itself can be seen in one day. My ticket to train de las nubes was cancelled in the last minute, so I missed it. It might have been perfect if all had gone thru as planned, but since it didn't, I just had one more day to find something to do.

The museums were great and the center has a lot to do.
The museums were great and the center has a lot to do. We didn't connect with the free walking tour but heard it was excellent. We enjoyed the view from the gondola and the top of the hill with the man-made waterfalls We took a day trip to San Lorenzo on the bus and hiked up to a peak where paragliders launch. We got lots of information from the tourist office during their English speaking hours. We ate at local places that served the local empanadas and a soft cornmeal packet with sweet corn called humita. We splurged for a nice dinner at a local spot and also did the tourist dinner with the dancing and singing (very talented musicians, dancers were OK). If we had more time, we would have visited more museums and maybe gone on the Train in the Clouds.

Salta is a nice northern capital city in Argentina.
Salta is a nice northern capital city in Argentina. The central plaza square always has lots of things going on and being a very walkable city, most of the attractions are fairly close by. After going through many of the museums in the area, you'll start to notice that the entire region has some points of interest that might make you wish you stayed longer.

There is not really that much to do in Salta from a tourist...
There is not really that much to do in Salta from a tourist perspective. Better to spend your time in the surrounding areas such as Purmamarca, Tilcara, Humahueca and Salinas Grandes north of Salta or Cafayate (highly recommended) to the southwest of Salta via the Quebrada Las Conchas. Stop at the Garganta del Diablo (Devil's Throat) and El Anfiteatro (the Amphitheatre) for spectacular scenery.

Villa Vicuña is an amazing little hotel in the town centre. I loved the decor, and the room was really comfortable. The back garden with a small pool and seating area is very inviting and quiet. Breakfast was great, with buffet options and a selection of cooked dishes. The staff were very nice and helpful. This is one of the loveliest hotels I ever stayed in - 100% recommend.
It is a new apartment, all clean and tidy! Comfortable and with hot shower. It has hair dryer which was very hard to find in other places in Argentina.
Alejandra (host) is very nice, flexible with check-in and payment. Also, sent us details about the check in and how to access the apartment in advance.
A beautifully renovated colonial building with polite and professional staff, decent breakfast (by Argentina standards, don't except a full English or German cold cut buffet) and very quiet for a great night's sleep. Good location about halfway between the central square and the bus station.
Such a lovely hostel! Dorm beds were big with a curtain around the bed, big lockers and aircon in the rooms. Free breakfast at the hotel next door was very nice. Would definitely recommend staying here, one of the nicer hostels I’ve been in Argentina so far
