EL HOSTELITO, hotel in Iruya

This is as basic as you get, but the company makes up for it! This is not a fair review because the most cuddly human-loving cat I've ever met decided to sleep on my bed, and who needs heating and material comfort when you got a wholesome kitty.

HOSTAL LA PLAZA IRUYA, hotel in Iruya

Great location in town, staff very kind and the room met our expectations. The shower was nice and warm, and we were within walking distance of many places to eat. There is a nice balcony, which we unfortunately didn't really use since it was cold and windy during our stay.

The wife of the owner did a good job of keeping the facilities clean. She also met us at the bus station when we arrived at the town to take us to the property. She alone kept this property from receiving one star.

If you want to go hiking from a very basic town then it’s great. I guess. But if you want anything else out of the town forget it. Zero. 58 km of dirt road each direction is not remotely worth the view. There are amazing views all over Argentina, if the town even had one interesting aspect fine but it doesn’t. Most people we saw there were sitting waiting for the next bus out. Nothing to do if you don’t hike. Sorry IRUYA, the rest of Argentina is amazing, you’re very ordinary by comparison.

A magical place in Salta, from the moment you turn off the highway it is just breath taking. We traveled in a 4x4 ute and were able to stop several times to take photos on the way. Iruya is a small town, perfect for people who love some adventure, enjoy peaceful nights, hiking and sightseeing. I will return as this is a place to stay more than just 1 night.

Iruya is a very old town, with amazing views.

Iruya is a very old town, with amazing views. It is not the prettiest as far as architecture goes, but the town is wonderful to explore by foot, it's a very unique place. It's located in the middle of very high mountains and it takes a while to get there. Be ready for a challenging drive if you're not used to the Salta/Jujuy/Catamarca kind of winding roads. It is easily accessible during the winter months (may-october), I am told it is much harder during the summer rainy season. Carry cash! There is a bank with an ATM but it is usually out of cash. There is no phone service on the road and little in Iruya, although there is WiFi available in hotels and restaurants. Plan ahead if you want to climb the Nido del Cóndor trail, it takes a while, and it is made much harder by the high altitudes. Even walking a couple of blocks inside the town (most of it is uphill) can be challenging.

The host (Dora Gonzales) was so so lovely! She was super helpful with answering all questions and giving suggestions for what to do in Iruya and neighbouring towns. It was an incredibly enjoyable stay in a lovely village. The hostel is very cute, with clean rooms and wonderful views of the mountain. I highly recommend this accommodation to anyone visiting Iruya!

It had great views over Iruya, situated right at the top. This did mean walking up and down pretty hilly terrain to the restaurants nearere to the centre if you did not drive. Staff did try to be helpful despite not speaking English.
