El Calafate is a small city in Argentinean Patagonia, situated in the foothills of the Andes and on the shores of Argentino Lake. Blending colourful wooden houses and Alpine-influenced architecture, it is the gateway to the Glaciers National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Booking.com offers a wide range of accommodation in El Calafate and surroundings, from 5-star hotels to cheap hostels.
The area was originally inhabited by the ‘Aonikenk’ people, while the modern settlement grew at the beginning of the 20th century as a refuge along the wool trade route, taking its name from the native blueberry bush known as ‘Calafate’. The town was founded by the Argentinean government in 1927 to promote the colonisation of the area, but its development started only after the creation of the National Park, in 1937.
The famous Perito Moreno Glacier is 80 km from the city. Mount Fitz Roy, the small town of El Chaltén, the romantic Onelli Bay, Lago del Desierto, and Roca Lake are some of the impressive landmarks that make up Argentina‘s 2nd-largest natural reservation. If you want to experience Patagonia’s languid vastness and tranquillity, try some of El Calafate’s rural accommodation or ‘estancias’.

We ate in great places who also accommodated my Celiac diet. The several ice cream shops with so many flavors did not have any that were gf which was very disappointing. Amazing gf chocolate store.
We drove around the gorgeous area and visited the outstanding glacier.
Can't express enough about how wonderful this town was. Should have stayed longer then 3 days.

Outside the hotel, nobody spoke English.
Outside the hotel, nobody spoke English. A tourist town, cosmopolitan and well prepared to cater witht tourists specialising in trekking and activities done at mountains locations, lakeside or countryside. It was easy to walk or hike around. Shops, supermarkets and pharmacies were well stocked. On the B side: a rather expensive city... blatantly expensive: some restaurants charged 22,000 pesos or more for ravioli or gnocchi bought at the local supermarket.
Drivers did not respect pedestrians, all in a hurry, perhaps late for a wake!!!! In Bariloche pedestrian are respected and this´ appreciated and valued.

El Calafate is worth spending a couple of nights in. Allow 1 day for the Perito Moreno Glacier, and another day to cruise around town -- lots of good shopping & restaurants to try. It's location on the lake makes for some great views! And enjoy all the free roaming dogs! They are very sweet, well fed, and know how to cross the streets safely! :)

It's a charming town with good restaurants, shops of various kinds, banks, tour guide offices. Some may describe it as touristy, but it has a very charming appeal and the bus terminal is nearby. Two restaurants that I thougt were absolutely wonderful were Mako and Pietro's. I had dinner at Mako's and it was 5 star worthy. Pietro's breakfast was superb. I loved staying in El Calafate, it felt fun, safe and. for me, it was a nice stopover between Buenos Aires and El Chalten.

El Calafate is definitely a place to go during a Visit to the Argentinian Patagonia. It was a very active town that seem to have all amenities available including access to tours, transportation, gas. groceries, restaurants and entertainment. It is the closest place to access the south entrance to Glacier National Park and to visit Perito Moreno Glacier which is absolutely impressive and a must see on your visit.

It is a small touristy town, from which the visit to the Parque Nacional Los Glaciares takes place. It has a good offer on restaurants, places to visit and go. Even has the El Museo del Juguete= Toy Museum with a lot of small toys from around the world from the beginning of the previous century. It is worth a visit. There are quite a few stray dogs everywhere, especially in the center of the town, but they did not bother us at all, quite the contrary, they were friendly and just wanted some food from tourists, haha.

It was the most spacious and comfortable accommodation I had during my trip in Argentina. A lot of light, a wonderful view, a lot of space, all the necessary commodities. I would stay there again if I return to El Calafate.
