Dinner was delicious and the staff was so kind. Really went above and beyond. Such a cozy atmosphere, I wished I stayed more than 1 night.

Located 39 km from Zao Onsen Ski Resort, Daichan Farm Guest House offers 2-star accommodation in Asahi-machi and features free bikes, a garden and a shared lounge. The owner is welcoming and enthusiastic. The meals were home-cooked, and quite delightful. The owner helped us facilitate a side trip in the area, very kindly. It's a remote rural location, which has its own beauty.

Set in Kaminoyama, Yamagata Zao Pension Aplon Stage features a pool with a view. It offers free WiFi, ski-to-door access, a garden and a restaurant. This is a great pension run by a lovely family. The husband picked us up at the bus station and drove us to the pension and also took us to the slopes in the morning. They gave us a coupon for renting gear and a map explaining the different onsen options around town. Their English is pretty limited, but they are happy to use Google translate. Also, it was not a big deal, but I think it is important for foreign guests to be aware that ski culture in Japan sort of assumes you are eating dinner at your accommodation. We did not know this and did not book dinner at the hotel. Most restaurants in town were fully booked with reservations (although there is a convenience store with good takeaway food), so try to book dinner at the hotel or make a dinner reservation somewhere well in advance. We were very luck and managed to make a reservation at the Mongolian lamb place Kasheru for the second night and that was amazing. But we saw restaurants turning people away repeatedly because everywhere in town was full. Also, the family will not pick you up by car any later that 6:45 pm (perfectly reasonable) and the public ski shuttles don't run on weekdays, so you need to pre-book a taxi if dinner will end later than that (which it probably will since most restaurants open at 6 pm). And there are not a lot of taxis and no Uber. I wish I had realized all of this up front, but that was our own ignorance and our stay was great regardless. Again, this is just the local ski culture and not the hotel's fault. It's just helpful information for future guests.

Located in Yamagata, 700 metres from Zao Onsen Ski Resort, G-SQUARE provides accommodation with a shared lounge and free private parking. The location was elite, staff were super lovely and helpful, breaky was a huge variety and delicious, everything was clean and well kept. You can snowboard straight into the accom from the main end of the slope and it’s right between chairlifts, while being close to the main gondola. We got our lift passes through the accom too at a good rate. There’s great restaurants around in walking distance. We thoroughly enjoyed staying here and will be back.

Set 500 metres from Zao Onsen Ski Resort, Pension Puutaro offers 3-star accommodation in Zao Onsen and features a garden. The hostess was incredibly warm and welcoming, the room was very comfortable, and the location was also quite good! It was a truly wonderful experience!

Featuring a garden, Snowfall Meteor 飛雪流星 is located in Kaminoyama in the Yamagata region, 2.2 km from Zao Onsen Ski Resort. The guest house features family rooms. A lovely and heartwarming place to stay for a winter getaway. The couple that owns this business made us feel like family. Mao and Qu are so kind and welcoming. They treated us like family. They picked us up from the bus station, drove us to a wonderful dinner location (which they recommended), drove us to the ski resort, and helped with all our luggage. I was so happy to meet them and talk with them. The room is just as warm as the owners. The floors are heated and the beds are very comfortable. I wish I could’ve stayed longer.

Set in Tsuruoka in the Yamagata region, 大聖坊 Daishobo offers accommodation with free WiFi and free private parking. I felt like family and yet had all the privacy I required. The Master was gracious to include me in the morning prayers. This stay was the best possible addition to my time on Mt Haguro and learning lore about the spirituality of the Yamabushi and the DewaSanzan. The food was incredible, so healthy and much was grown locally. It was the best place I stayed in my two weeks in Japan.

Situated in Tsuruoka, 17 km from Kamo Aquarium, Ohanabatake features accommodation with a garden and free private parking. Very warm place, the host is a kind gentleman and really care about his guest. The room is big for solo traveller, although no air-conditioner but the room is cool and I can sleep well every night. There are no restaurants or shop nearby, yet I am bycycle traveller and there is a big supermarket 3km nearby only take 15mintues ride :)

Lodge Christmas Rose Zao has mountain views, free WiFi and free private parking, situated in Zao Onsen, less than 1 km from Zao Onsen Ski Resort. The people running it were amazing, so helpful, drove us around everywhere in zao and took care of every need!
