Paolo gave us a bacon and eggs breakfast, along with the standard -- but exceptionally tasty and warm -- pastries and cakes. Fresh fruit was also on offer, which, strangely, is usually missing from fruit-rich Calabrian B&B's.

It truly felt like a home away from home. Additionally, the owner was exceptionally hospitable and went above and beyond to ensure a pleasant stay. Situated within 600 metres of Spiaggia di Scalea and 19 km of La Secca di Castrocucco, Casa Marinari features rooms with air conditioning and a private bathroom in Scalea. This is one of the loveliest and most charming places I have ever stayed (and I've traveled a lot both in Italy and around the world). This place was like a dream. First of all, it's 5 walking minutes from the beach (maybe not even). I went swimming and the water was so beautiful, so transparent. The owner, Michele (pronounced Me-KEL-ay), was extremely kind and helpful. He is the source behind the renovation of this entire place (masterpiece). It's been 3 years and he continues to make big changes (i.e. currently adding more rooms and apartments). The house is beautiful. It has a balcony upstairs that is beyond charming and has a breathtaking view. The house is full of modern amenities (the bathroom and shower were state of the art), yet it preserves the old. It is so well-designed and tastefully decorated. It's full of class. Frankly, I think it's a masterpiece. If you are looking for a huge city, Scalea is probably not the place to come (except in the summer), but if you prefer beautiful, moderate-sized authentic villages where the pace of life is slower and people in the streets know and talk to one another, this may be your place.
