This was my second visit to this hotel - my first was two years earlier when I had an excellent suite of rooms in the main 18th century building, where all the eight bedrooms are served by an original stone spiral staircase. My recent visit however was based in an adjoining separate building called "Gite - Cottage" with its own front door and two spacious bedrooms upstairs. Very well equipped, recently modernised, and looking onto the sheltered courtyard in front of the hotel. The situation of the hotel is remarkable, as it is not visible from the Place Saint Martin. On my first visit it took me some 10 minutes to find the entrance, which is through an archway with a locked gate, but once found I used the code which the hotel had provided. After that all was well. The more modern houses built directly onto the square provide privacy and tranquillity for the courtyard and hotel behind them.
The proprietor, a remarkable man called David, has excellent English, and is most helpful and friendly. He also has good taste, which is apparent throughout the design and style of the interior rooms and furnishings. The bedroom for my first visit was called "la Chambre Rouge", as its colour scheme was predominantly red. .
The situation of the hotel is admirably placed to afford easy access on foot to the main points of tourist interest in this beautiful city. In particular, and close to the hotel, there is the elegant Hotel de Ville, based in the vast former 18th century monastery buildings. This is right next door to the early Norman church of St Etienne, where there is the tomb of William the Conqueror, who of course was Duke of Normandy before he became King of England.
I would be very happy to return to Caen, and stay once more at this hotel.

Amazing stay! We wanted somewhere near the port to start our family holiday and Le Bas was exceptional. We had the private suite which had a separate room for the kids with loads of toys (our son kept calling it the playroom!). Facilities were great, gardens beautiful and the hosts were super friendly. And the breakfast, wow! Highly recommend.
This is a no frills hotel that we have now stayed in 3 times before driving to the Dordogne. It’s basic, very clean, quiet and with a very comfortable big bed. Breakfast was lovely, croissants, pain au chocolate, bread, cereals, fruit, yoghurt, cheese, ham, egg etc. lovely juices and teas and coffees. It’s a bargain. Man on reception was very pleasant.
Room was excellent value for money great night sleep, easy access for all routes to ferry, city, etc The sister Hotel amenities were used at nigh time for Alcoholic drinks in the reception area and staff were also great in that Hotel. It was also good for McDonalds which is right next door if you want a simple meal. We walked into the City Center which wasn't as far as some of the locals had made out. We loved our stay and the City is a very Beautiful place to stay and enjoy. Car Parking was also first class
