From the reviews, we decided to come and stay an extra evening in Melk, rather than continue in Vienna, and it certainly did not disappoint. Large, spacious, modern and sophisticated, we lived in luxury for a reasonable off-season price. We later learnt that Der Goldener Stern also had a past as a historic inn owned by the Abbey. No staff were seen, and none were needed at this self check-in apartment. Radiator was great for drying washed clothes.

Featuring free WiFi throughout the property, Smile Apartments zum Goldenen Hirschen is situated in the centre of Krems an der Donau, 1.2 km from Caricature Museum Krems. Nice building and surroundings, well equipped room with A/C, fridge, coffee and tea maker. Detailed instructions how to enter a room and where to park a car sent in advance. A bigger free parking place is just 200m behind the corner with signs to display who should park where (some old BMW car parked on our parking space ignoring the sign, but fortunately, the parking place was not full and there were another unoccupied spaces to park a car).

Owner brought us coffee and chokolade for wellcoming. Quiet place and 15min drive to center of Vienna. Also bus stops right in front of appartment.

It was a clean location easy to reach from the motorway. I liked the fact that the toilet and the shower/ washing room were separated. The kitchen was well equipped and the apartment itself was spacious.

Beautiful property (located between Vienna and Graz) in the process of being slowly and carefully refurbished by the owner. We didn’t know the building’s history (google it!) so that was a bonus. We stayed for nearly 10 days in some of the worst weather that the region has ever experienced (with flooding and storm-damaged roads and properties). Aside from a quickly resolved roof leak, we were safe and cozy indoors. And when the weather turned pleasant about half way through our vacation, we could enjoy wonderful walking and tourist excursions in the nearby landscape and farther-flung towns. We have already recommended the property to others and would return!
