This island is a secret gem, and we were astonished by it's beauty and serenity. Amazing flora and fauna, its turquise waters so clean you can see everything under, urlchins, slugs, fish, molluscs. The cicadas are the only sound you hear cutting trough the sounds of waves.
Whatever you love in nature, you will find here. Mountains, beautifully preserved Mediterranean forests, beaches, the sea. The smell of aleppo pines, salt water and flowers blooming will follow you around. The island is bigger than we thought but only has about 5-600 permanent residents. We were very sad to hear that due to international and internal politics, most residents need 2-3 jobs to stay afloat. They would deserves so much more for the hard work they put in.

OKUKLJE BAY and the locals:
They left an impression we will never forget. We travelled to many countries and stayed with the locals wherever we could but not once experienced the helpful, lovely, welcoming attitude Nikki and the small community of just over 30 has shown us.
You can access the whole of Mljet island from here but you will need to rent a car, scooter or bikes unless you want to go on very long walks up and down winding roads. The small bay/ village has only one road and several houses but offers a great variety of local and international food with 5 restaurants and 2 small local shops. If you want to to a bigger shopping spree, you would need to drive to the neighbouring place, where you can find a supermarket.
We dined at Porto Della Vita, met Anton and his lovely father, who owns the restaurant. Food is amazing, locally sourced, fresh and cooked for you then and there. Hospitality is impeccable, prices fair and affordable. Definitely recommend. Fish, mussels, octopus on the menu is the daily cath, most ingredients locally grown and sourced.

Everything. It's such a lovely little house in a small secluded bay. The neighbour checked us in and was super helpful and friendly. She even brought us cake on the last evening. It was super comfortable and had everything you might need. Only the bathroom is quite small but it didn't bother us. Even though it's a longer drive to visit the national park we loved staying there and wished we could have had some more days. A few good restaurants in the bay too which was a bonus. Would definitely come back for a second visit.

Maria and Fabian are super nice hosts, who treated us as friends and told us a lot about the island, the village Korita and life of islanders. Peaceful place with cozy garden. Perfectly clean and tastefully designed apartment in a renovated old stone house where we didn't even have to use air condition (in July).
Nikki is a great host. She was very nice and hospitable. The apartment is big enough for two people, and the bed was comfortable and clean. In hot weather, you can cool the room with A/C. Okuklje is a very calm place with some restaurants, a small grocery shop, and a small beach. If you are thinking about visiting Mljet, Nikki has a great apartment for you at a very reasonable price. :)

The restaurant was very delicious. The prices for food were more or less the same like on the other islands around. High, but fair when you see that nearly everything is regional and homemade.
This is a wonderful place to stay!! The view from the terrace of the open sea is just incredible! We loved the extremely quiet and peaceful village location. There are no amenities in the village, no shops, no restaurants, no beaches, so you will need to drive everywhere, but that results in the ultimate peaceful location. The apartment had everything we needed for our stay.
The apartment is situated in the most romantic corner of the beautiful harbor. It features a nice terrace from where you have a great view of the harbor. It is an incredibly peaceful spot. In front of the terrace there is also a small garden with flowers. In the same building there is also another apartment. The apartment is on the ground floor, there are only a few steps from the street. You can park in the front of the apartment.
The apartment was in a quiet part of Mljet, with private beach and nice terrace overlooking the sea. Perfect stay for a few days in the island. Stermasi restaurant also strongly recommended (prices a bit on the high side, but worth the quality of ingredients and location). Amazing host.
Perfect location by the see. Very private place with only a few apartments around. It is a mooring place for ships over the night. There is one small market here and 4 restaurants.
The owner let us check in earlier which was great. The apartment is small and has everything you need for a short stay. The view from the balcony is STUNNING and we enjoyed every minute!
We truly enjoyed our stay in Korita. The hosts were so welcoming and did everything possible to make our stay enjoyable. The different areas of the garden allow each ‘apartment’ to enjoy sitting out while maintaining privacy. Korita is a 5min drive to Sapluna and its sandy beaches and about 50 min away from the National park and the lakes. You will need a car though to go around the island.
