The owner was very welcoming and friendly, all the locals who came by were also very fun and friendly, they invited out us for a short outing nearby as well. The onsen was a nice touch. Main social room was cozy with lots of personality, the dorm and bathrooms were good for a quick night in a mountain town.

The main hotel was fully booked, so we chose a room at their annex. Really glad we did! Rooms are right on the edge of the water.
Large picture window doors open from both the living room and bathroom to a beautiful deck. We watched people fishing from the breakwater and cormorants and herons fishing too.. Totally quiet and peaceful!
The room was Huge! New, finished with special woods. Bathroom was also huge, and the tub looked out to the bay. Nice architectural details and design. An excellent cafe and bakery next door opens at 10;00 AM. Good Nespresso coffee in the room.
The annex is about a mile from the hotel, but this wasn't a problem. They'll provide a ride to and from the hotel for meals, the hotel onsen, etc. It's also a pleasant walk on the S. side of the hwy where you're protected from traffic. The hotel can arrange a ride to the nearby Aino train station which takes you directly (2 car trains through the country about an hour) to the ferry port for the comfortable boat ride to Kagoshima.
Dnners and breakfasts at the hotel were amazing! Staff is great! Check out the local footbath park and adjacent restaurant which cooks food with geothermal water. Good sandwich-makings at the supermarket. Slow Chicken takeaways next to the hotel were also good. Definitely the way to go from Nagasaki to Kagoshima!

I love the dinner so much. The food is outstanding if compare with other ryokan. Dinner is perfect but breakfast is ok not as good as dinner. The room is big and comfortable. What I impress is they got 2 bathroom which is so rare in Japan.

We stayed in an old-fashioned but very spacious tatami room with a beautiful lake view. The breakfast both mornings was excellent, featuring 10+ traditional dishes

The room was much more than I expected and smelled nicely of wood and Hinoki. The location was perfect given close proximity to the Jigoku (steam vents and boiling mud) area. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful.
Nice place to hike. Plenty of greenery even in December.
Nice place to hike. Plenty of greenery even in December. Not so pleasant if it rains.
Hiking nearer the ridge may not be suitable to those who are not so fit as it can get quite steep.
Using the ropeway could ease the trip a bit for those who have some health challenges.

Perfect place to enjoy Unzen. Staffs are VERY kind and friendly. They really welcomed us truthfully. Room was SO big and SUPER CLEAN and the bedding were really comfy so I slept well everyday. Nice view from the room. You can see the whole lake from the balcony. You can have some cup nuddles and coffee anytime in the public lounge which is open 24hr. Some tablewares, microwaves and hot water are also provided for free in the lounge which is very useful. Strongly recommend this place to you.
This is a small local onsen hotel. I had a comfortable stay for a night . My room included a washroom and for the bathroom we used the shared public onsen. The onsen is excellent which is clean and spacious. There are few rooms of onsen (both indoor and open air), so we can choose trying different ones. In overall the stay is really reasonably priced. I would recommend it if you are going to stay in Unzen.
Gorgeous views of Oshidorino Pond from the room. I stayed in the room at the end. Room was enormous - two beds a
Desk and plenty of space for luggage. The room also had a separate sitting area (I didn’t use it) bathroom and toilet in their own rooms as well.
Room had all I needed for a basic stay in Unzen
Dorm room was clean, close access to everything in unzen onsen, and the host was kind enough to help me plan my hike. We are also given free tickets to one of the public baths which I enjoyed.
The staff was nice and the breakfast was tasty. The room and the bathroom were very clean. Highly recommended to low budget travellers who wish to get a good stay in Unzen. :)
