Approaching the ports (several, depending on your tour), you will notice there are kilometers and kilometers of half built buildings... the entire coast is ghost town. You might not notice it, but then you see that the 20 stories building is just a shell and look better... it's really sad. Upon enquiry, "allegedly" it seems the level of corruption of the local government allowed chinese companies to do this on some level.
Water and air is terribly polluted as the boat waste goes straight into the water and all the engines run on gasoline. I wouldn't dare even thinking of bathing here, despite the pictures that circulate on the web (maybe they are 20 years old or something...).
I am glad I visited in winter. One night was more than enough, super expensive, it feels like profound and careless exploitation of what would otherwise be a beautiful place and I deeply regret having been part of it. But then, if you are terribly shallow, you might also enjoy it.

It wasn't too crowded at the beginning of January. The weather was nice, not too hot or cold. The tour I attended only had 10 members which was great. However, it was a pity that the air pollution was serious, so it couldn't see the scenery very clearly. As a result, a 1 day/6 hours tour is enough to admire Halong Bay and the cave.

I did a day cruise around Ha Long Bay and then spent one day in Ha Long. There doesn’t seem much to do in Ha Long City but I appreciated having one day off to enjoy the beach & quiet before heading up to Hanoi. I think most folks do a cruise from Hanoi, but I really liked my time in Ha Long.

Halong bay is really beautiful along with a theme park. The only downside during low season is the limited choice of restaurants open for business. But the quality of food ranks way above the big brand hotels

We had such a great time on the Unicharm Halong Bay Cruise.
We had such a great time on the Unicharm Halong Bay Cruise. So glad we had booked 2 nights as we had the time to go hiking on Cat Ba and spend time at the beach as well as all the other activities- kayaking, swimming and cycling through the island villages. The scenery was even more awesome than I expected. On board the cabin and food were great and everything ran like clockwork. The care and attention we got from our guide Huei is worth a special mention - for the small group staying 2 days he tailored our itinerary specifically for us so it felt very special. Even in the larger group he was constantly checking that everyone was happy. He also takes great photos!!
If you’re thinking of cruising H Bay, don’t hesitate to book this cruise.

We loved wandering around Ha Long.
We loved wandering around Ha Long. There are a lot of areas where improvements can be made. Being a tourist area, the cafes and restaurants need to lift their game. There is nowhere to have breakfast or lunch. The cafe's at An Bang beach were a lot better. Also, when walking around the waterfront, we noticed a lot of rubbish in the water. It is not a good look.
We would like to go back one day soon.

Genesis Cruise gave us a memorable stay in Ha Long. Their food options were great. A taste of Vietnam and went out of their way to cater for what we needed. A fine dining experience. A warm reception and professional attention to details. From the beginning the communication with the agent (Ms Chee) was so helpful and prompt. She made our experience enjoyable. The luxury shuttle from Hanoi hotel to Ha Long Bay (3 hours drive) was a cherry on top! Not expected at all.
Having a full sized hotel suite on a cruise boat exceeded our expectations. Ammenities were modern and luxurious. Combined with the setting (beautiful Lan Ha/Ha Long Bay) and this was a truly magical experience. We were well looked after by Kevin our waiter who attended to us throughout the 3 day, 2 night cruise. Thank you Kevin!! Tom (Cruise!) the GM has a wonderful team who are all exceptional. This was a trip that we will never forget.
Hard to imagine a better value hotel in Ha Long. Really great hotel that is exceptional value. If you stay here u can do your own Ha Long bay sunset walking tour every evening, doing the 20 mimute walk along the bay to Vincom plaza shopping mall. Circle K is 5 minutes walk away and there are 2 Highlands Coffees within 10 minutes. Limo mini buses to Hanoi and Ninh Binh can pick you up and drop you off here. Overall, a fantastic option.
The pizza was the best pizza I've had in Asia. The staff were so friendly and helpful. We literally organised everything from the hotel (our food and cruise in Ha Long Bay). The room was lovely. Great WiFi and we had a bath which was great too.
The hostess was amazing and very helpful. She organized a Boat Trip for us and gave us amazing recommendations for sightseeing trips around Ha Long Bay. We enjoyed the nights spent there and would absolutely recommend the hotel.
