The owners were really friendly and hospitable. The rooms were provided with a bathroom and hot water shower. Even a common bathroom was also there.
Free coffee and free bananas were provided, and the owner insisted that we should eat first. It was really nice of them.
A microwave was there in the common kitchen, which helped us to warm our foods from 7-11, which is just 150 meters away from the hostel.
There were some soft toys in the room, which gave me a homely vibe.
Great for those who look for just a place to crash and sleep during the travel.

Nice smaller town with compact and very easy 'walkable' centre. You can find almost everything a bigger town (like Chiang Mai) could offer at easy walking sistance. Pleasant night bazar with many food stalls and buying opprtunities of local artifact and otheer products. Busstation also at easy walking distancewithin the town centre area. Also a good place for organising/booking trips in the surrounding area, varying from the famous White Temple (12 km) to outdoor trekking type of ac tivities. Or a 2 day long boath trip over the great Mekong river from Thai-Lao border in the nort to Luang Prabang (as well used by tourists as regular local Thai/Lao travelers)

From my online research, Chiang Rai is enticing due to the photos of the White Temple, clock tower, blue temple, and large white Buddha. I found all of the attractions good for a nice Instagram photo, but other than the less-visited Wat Phraw Kaew, there is little of historical value to see. If you like a Disney-esque-like amusement park like temple experience where the only thing to do is get your Instagram photos, then the White Temple is perfect for you. A historical temple it is not (it was comical how you took off your shoes, put them in a plastic bag, then walked into a very small and plain Buddha shrine area, only to be ushered out to either side by the throng of tourists behind you only to toss the plastic bag in the trash and continue waiting in queues to take more photos. The actual shrine was a second thought. There was no "there" there. The town's clock tower is nice, but the music and light show is meh. Again, good for a photo. Both the Blue and White temples were built after the 90s. Anyway, good food in town (as I have found everywhere in Thailand) and lots of places catering to tourists with higher prices. I could have easily done this city in a day instead of the three I spent (and I usually like to stay in places longer than most people). Transportation was fairly easy. Bus to/from White temple from main station and easy to walk around city center. Don't miss the free art gallery just outside the White Temple, that was the best part of my White Temple visit.

While it is lesser known as its Southern cousin Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai has its own charm and unique attractions that make a stay there well worth your time. You could do a day trip from Chiang Mai but that would mean 3 hours on the road each way. Consider staying overnight to have more time to see everything.

After spending 17 days in Bangkok, Chiang Rai was a nice break for 3 days. Quiet, slower pace of life. Lovely night bazaar with lots of food options (love the hot pot) and live music. Wat Rong Khun white temple, Wat Rong Seur blue temple and Wat Huay Pla Kang big Buddha are worth seeing. Khun Korn NationalPark is worth the hike up to the waterfall - bamboo jungle and cold refreshing swim. We were here in mid-March so farmers are burning and very hazy up north so did not go to the golden triangle.

If Chiang Mai is the "jewel of the north" then Chiang Rai is...
If Chiang Mai is the "jewel of the north" then Chiang Rai is the "Emerald of the True North".
Chiang Rai history dates back beyond Chiang Mai and was the original Lanna city state founded by King Mengrai in the mid 1200s AD. This king of times long past is still revered and remembered to this day by Lanna people.
Chiang Rai has history coming out of its cobblestones and weblike laneways. I won't try to list them here because they are easy to find in many other reviews and info sheets. What I can do here is just to raise interest in one of the most understated jewels of Thailand.
Chiang Rai is the central hub of Lanna culture today. And the Lanna language is still spoken commonly all around Chiang Rai province. In many homes it's the preferred language until kids start going to school and so can be heard all over the place. I've often heard conversations where people interchange Lanna with Thai ... very confusing. The temples and shrines of Chiang Rai province are just as spectacular and just as mystical as any elsewhere in Thailand. And the history of the Lanna people is integrally intertwined in all the older temples, chedis, stupas, salas and other public places.
Chiang Rai province is renowned for its coffee at Doi Chang and other places. It's also one of the major tea growing areas of Asia. Mountainous landscapes eclipse anything that can be seen further south and the weather is always a bit cooler and fresher air than further south also. A short drive north can take you up to the Myanmar border at Mai Sai and you can even go visit the Mekong River in all its glory.
If you plan to visit Northern Thailand and only go as far as Chiang Mai then you are missing out BIGTIME!!!
So I suggest you 'do yourself a favour' and make plans to explore Chiang Rai and all its provincial eye-catching destinations soon. Happy Travels.

Definitely worth recommending. When I entered the room, I knew that I would want to stay here for a longer time. Cleanliness, comfortable beds, bathroom, location and, above all, the atmosphere here make the hotel highly rated by guests. I started the day with pleasure with delicious coffee and really good breakfasts. I would like to thank the hosts for their hospitality, and I will definitely come back only to Baan Jaru.
The hotel is clean, pleasant and well maintained. It located about a 10-minute walk from central places in the city. The rooms are clean. The hotel has a laundry facility which is very practical and helpful.
The breakfast is good. The hotel staff is very
kind and helped us with everything we needed, including booking attractions, booking taxis and any other matter. Mainly would like to mention Al.
Thanks a lot.
I thought breakfast was not included but there is actually
a self serve kitchen area with breads, coffees and fruits which was a really nice extra. All the little touches around the hotel are really cute. Rooms are really comfortable and good size. Hotel also provides an airport shuttle service for a good price. Great location to explore Chiang Rai city.
The room was nicely decorated and clean, and the hotel had great communal areas and a pool too (although we didn't have time to use them). There was a great choice for breakfast, and the staff were all very courteous. The location is a little out of town, but nice and quiet, and cheap to get to via Grab.
Loved the beds! It was like floating on clouds ! Best after 3 weeks of travelling in 4-5 star hotels. The pool was great as were the rooms. Only spent 1 night
here but are planning to come back next June for a week! Breakfast was plentiful with good variety .
