Sofitel Legend Old Cataract, hotel in Naj‘ al Maḩaţţah

Located in the Nubian Desert on the banks of the Nile, opposite Elephantine Island, Sofitel Legend Old Cataract offers elegant rooms and suites. It features outdoor and indoor pools.

A Stay at the Legendary Sofitel Old Cataract in Aswan In mid-October, my wife and I had the pleasure of spending a week at the Sofitel Old Cataract in Aswan, Egypt. To call this hotel remarkable would be an understatement—it is one of the most compelling places I’ve ever had the privilege to stay. Perched majestically above a narrow stretch of the Nile, the Sofitel Old Cataract offers an unparalleled view of the river’s famous cataracts—those ancient, rugged boulders that disrupt the water’s flow. From nearly every corner of the hotel—the restaurant, the lounge, the pool, and many rooms—you are treated to vistas that include Elephantine Island, a site inhabited by humans for over 6,000 years. The island, with its Nubian village, is just a short felucca ride away, and the hotel conveniently has its own dock for those looking to explore the river and its surroundings. Across the Nile, ancient tombs carved into the cliffs of Aswan’s west bank are easily accessible, offering a seamless blend of luxury and history. The Sofitel Old Cataract itself is steeped in history. Built over a century ago, the hotel exudes the grandeur of the British colonial era. Its stately architecture and interior design transport you to a bygone age. One of the restaurants has been preserved as it was in the 1930s, allowing guests to dine in the very setting where Churchill once sat. The hotel honors its rich heritage through suites named after its famous guests. Agatha Christie famously wrote Death on the Nile while staying here, and while her suite is primarily available for tours, its presence adds to the sense of historical reverence that defines this property. Our room was a masterpiece of elegance and comfort—spacious, with high ceilings, large windows, and thoughtfully designed appointments. Every detail was perfectly curated to provide both a sense of grandeur and the modern amenities one would expect from a five-star hotel. The pool deserves special mention.

Kato Dool Wellness Resort, hotel in Naj‘ al Maḩaţţah

Located in Aswan, 12 miles from Aga Khan Mausoleum, Kato Dool Wellness Resort provides accommodations with an outdoor swimming pool, free private parking, a garden and a shared lounge.

Good things: 1. Absolutely stunning view towering over the nile and nubian village below. We also stayed at BenBen during our Aswan stay and Kato Dool’s view is far far better facing east toward the rising sun and there is a path to go up over the hill and see the sunset into the sand dunes. The view alone is worth the price and the pain of getting there. 2. Delicious nubian food and drinks. We highly suggest the nubian coffee, it some nice spices with flavor the coffee. Huge portions so best get an entree and appetizer for two people. Really nice wait staff. 3. Nice private and cozy balconies and rooms. The rooms came with an extra fleece blanket to take onto the balcony during the chilly December mornings to watch the sunrise. The little chair swing was very cozy and private so you hardly ever saw your neighbors. 4. The architecture is stunning and unique. We did not see anything like it outside of this particular area.

Nubian Kulih house, hotel in Naj‘ al Maḩaţţah

Nubian Kulih house has a garden, shared lounge, a terrace and restaurant in Ash Shallāl.

<Location> This hostel is located in the West bank, next to the Nile river. Very close to the entrance of Abu Simbel highway which opens at 5am, hence I could leave slightly later compare to those who lives on the East bank (Aswan city) and Elephantine island. <Service and Hospitality> Greeted and welcomed by the Hostel Manager upon arrival with a welcome drink (Hibiscus juice) Clear explanation on the hostel facilities and the accessibility (via motorboat/tuk tuk) to get around. All hostel staffs were super friendly, kind and helpful. <Facilities and Amenities> Bedroom comes with air conditioner and ensuite bathroom. Both were clean, shampoo sachet is provided. Quiet at night and well functioned water heater and water pressure. Really enjoyed my time at the hostel cafe, overlooking the Nile river with a nice drink, Nubian music and the cool breeze.
