As a former manager in four and five star hotels details mean a lot to me. Apparently they also mean a lot at the JW Marriott as attention to detail was noticeable throughout the property.
The entire front service staff was gracious and welcoming. The Bellman were always present at the curbside, greeting customers and promptly and efficiently handling luggage. I never had to open the door when going in and out as staff was always present to do so. The front office staff was prompt and efficient and made me feel like a welcome guest.
We dined at the buffet for breakfast and dinner as well as prime steakhouse. Staff was cordial, attentive, and professional. Buffets were abundant and well maintained. Food was attractively presented, fresh, and delicious.
I was also impressed with the high level of cleanliness, and the overall excellence of the housekeeping staff. Public areas were consistently well maintained and spotless, as was our guest room, which had a large variety of amenities.
The fitness center featured over 20 new Life Fitness machines. They included aerobic and weightlifting machines. There were also free weights and a stairmaster. Every machine had a bottle of water. There was also a dispenser of cucumber water.I was also presented with a bottle of water and a towel upon entering. There was also an outdoor swimming pool sauna and steam room.
They might be more expensive than other hotels however, completely worth it. I will stay in no other place in Medan now that I’ve been spoiled by the JW Marriott.

I think the restaurant should've open ealier cause I am really starving and craving for food in the morning. The people was nice and affable. When we asked questions, they wore a smile and answered patiently. The becak and angkut were great, l enjoyed the breeze and the city view. Deli Park was majestic ✨️ and also Tjong A Fie Mansion was spectacular and historical. What I like the most in Medan is definitely the Medan people! They are amiable, helpful snd loving ! A memorable trip indeed.

Medan itself is not very inviting to visitors.
Medan itself is not very inviting to visitors. I stay there only on my way or return from Lake Toba. The hotels in Medan are OK and I visited Aryaduta for many years already. Is value for money with a fantastic breakfast buffet. Rooms are always OK.

The food in Medan is superb, although some rumah makan did not really practice hygiene. Generally, it was easy to find non-halal and halal restaurants. Jong Ah Fie Mansion is awesome. Im impressed that a lot of the things there are well preserved. Istana Maimoon is okay for buying handcrafts. The Graha Bunda Maria Annai Velangkanni church is very unique too. However, I must admit that Lake Toba is the main highlight of my visit there. The lake is super beautiful and I really enjoy my stay and time at Lake Toba - Samosir, Karo, Berastagi etc...will definitely recommend travellers who enjoy immersing themselves in peaceful nature to visit Lake Toba. :) Seriously, the sunrise and sunset are mind blowing.

Medan, indeed all of Sumatra is much cleaner than Java.
Medan, indeed all of Sumatra is much cleaner than Java. A lot more pride taken civically. Most folk uses Medan as their entry point to Toba. I just wished I'd spent more time in Medan first. Lovely place.

Medan is a great arrival and exit city for access to Sumatra
Medan is a great arrival and exit city for access to Sumatra
There is a good number of attractions for a day tour of the city of Medan itself and I would recommend this.
Aside from this is it best to stay in the places you are visiting.
Unlike what the internet may suggest you definitely cannot do a day tour to Lake Toba from Medan in one day unless you want to spend anywhere from 10 to 17 hours in a car. I do not recommend... at all.
A sunrise hike of Mount Sibayak from Medan is doable but will be very tiring and I would recommend staying in Berastagi instead.

Their executive room is the best value in Medan and beyond. Breakfast is very rich, they have a business center too, not sure why the hotel is only 3-star, maybe due to it's relatively small size or the immediate surroundings (location is centric but outside street is a bit dusty and hectic). But the experience is 5 star, at least when staying in an executive room.
Room was clean. Staff was friendly and willing to help. The amount of options in Medan seem limited, so this one felt like the best choice. They also have a restaurant, so you can get coffee and breakfast in the morning.
Good hotel when you have an early flight from Medan airport. The room is quite small. 10sqm, including the bathroom. The airport shuttle costs 25k per person.
