Historic Melaka (or Malacca) is the capital of the Malaysian state of the same name, home to one of the country’s first sultanates. The replica of the sultan’s palace is one of the city’s top attractions.
The end of the sultanate came with the Portuguese conquest of Melaka in the 16th century. Reminders of this period include part of A Famosa fort, and there is also a fort built by the next settlers, the Dutch. Several Dutch churches also remain, including Christ Church with its pinkish façade.
Nowadays, Melaka is a melting pot of various cultures, and Chinese temples, such as wonderful Cheng Hoon Teng, sit happily alongside Hindu temples and mosques. The most spectacularly located of the latter is Masjid Selat (or Malacca Straits Mosque), on stilts above waters lapping an offshore island.
Many Melaka hotels on Booking.com are near the promenade lining the narrow city beach, and others are near more secluded beaches in the suburbs. The Melaka River splits the city into 2, and the further inland you travel along it, the more traditional the buildings become.
Just before the river’s first bend is Jonker Street, the heart of Chinatown and popular for its night markets, while a few miles to the north is Melaka Airport in the Batu Berendam district.
Visited Melaka for 4 days. I loved the city vibe. Melaka river cruise and walk, Junker Street and other places worth visiting. Accommodation and food and transport are one of the cheapest I have ever seen. City traffic never saw any congestion. I will visit Melaka again.

Melaka have improved a lot after the MCO with the riverside being lit up with lots of light and more restaurant and cafe by the riverside. Which made the riverwalk more interesting whether it is in the daytime or night time. It gives the old colonial areas an unique blend of old & new for tourist to visit.

The best time to visit would be to make sure you get a Friday or Saturday that's when the night markets are open and worth the experience but it will be crowded especially in the summer with more bus tours.

It's a great town rich with culture, so definitely visit the museum.
If you wanna go to Jonker Night Market, don't drive, grab there.
Ladies, always prepare tissues in your bag, don't dump into toilet though. And a small bottle of antibacterial hand soap.
If you're OCD like me, antibacterial wet wipes or sanitizer as well.

Melaka is an excellent 3-night/two and a half days destination. Easy to access from across the Singapore border by bus ($15 to $30 each way trips), and an absolute must to those of us who are into colonial street scapes and architecture. The town has become quite a bit more "touristy" with every new visit that I make, but that in no way diminishes all that this brilliant locality has to offer.
*Friday, Saturday, Sunday nights are when the Jonker Walk Night Markets are on, well worth a look.

See reviews by guests who stayed at hotels in Malacca
The Hotel is centrally located and easy to get food outside the Hotel and Melaka Ole-Ole which is across the road from Holiday Inn is the best place to buy souvenirs from Malacca. It has the best parking and so many parking space near the Lobby and covered parking below the lobby and it is free and you could also reserve a parking space. It has shuttle going to Mahkota Paradae and Stadhuys [Red Building] every 2 hours and return but must book in advance. They have Executive Lounge which we fully used. Their pillows are really very comfortable.
It was a privilege to stay in this hotel with rich heritage. The place was beautiful and the facilities were very modern to provide comfort for the guests. The location is great for all Malacca old town exploring. The hotel itself is very beautiful with courtyard and an old water well and lots antique furnitures. We took lots of pictures. The roof top bar is very beautiful. There are free towels if you like to sit on the sun chair dipped in the shallow pool.
Hotel location, able to accomodate late check in, housekeeping service, reception service, room service was superb!!! Ive stayed this hotel for about 4yrs whenever i come to Malacca. Marvellous customer service, rooms & toilet was clean. Definately recommended!!!!
