The Dormy Inn is a great hotel. My family booked two western-style rooms that were next to each other. Their rooms are large, especially by Japanese standards. My wife stayed at another hotel a few days later in Mito, and thought she was sleeping in a coffin. Their onsen was excellent and I suggest any westerner should try it. The 9:30 pm chef-prepared ramen was the best I’ve ever had. The hotel is located nearby all of Mito City’s main tourist attractions and is only a few blocks from Mito Station. It is $25 one-way to go to Tokyo Station on a limited Express train, which takes about an hour. The staff can understand and communicate in very basic English, but have Google Translate available just in case. There are many restaurants nearby. Make sure to have Google Translate because not every restaurant has an English menu or speaks English.

Some of the staff were really friendly this trip, especially during the typhoon that hit while I was there. She asked me what brought me to Mito and where I was planning to go, and we talked a little while she worked. I really appreciated the conversation.

The room was clean and comfortable and served us well for our needs. The bed, though narrow and just barely enough room for all of us, was comfy and the bathroom was spacious enough for how small the room was otherwise. The free self-serve coffee service was a huge plus and greatly appreciated, especially given most other hotels no longer offer complimentary coffee with their rooms.

Special thanks to Mr Yutaka Oouchi and his colleagues at the front desk who helped us and showed us how to navigate the Japanese GPS in our rental car. Take note of the carpark if driving. The carpark is a multi storey block behind the hotel. Only available from level 3 onwards. We parked at level 4 and fprtunately there was a lift that brought us to level 3, which is the street level leading to hotel. Hand over the parking slip to hotel upon check in, pay 500Y and they will exchange another slip for you.

I nice city in central Ibaraki.
I nice city in central Ibaraki. Good restaurants and in summer the lake and park are excellent. The stores around the main station are interesting and will appeal to a wide range of people and there are many good hotels near the station.

There are a lot of attractions around or nearby Mito.
There are a lot of attractions around or nearby Mito. The only problem is many of them are difficult to get to. Even the ones that are not too difficult to get can be difficult in terms of distance or a lot of waiting time for buses. Each time to take a bus, you would expect to wait for a least half an hour to 1 hour even for sight-seeing tourist buses. Also, as JR pass would not work for buses, you would expect much higher traffic expenses compared to visiting most of other places in Japan.
The proximity to the station was one of the key selling points of this hotel. From here, I was able to make the most of my few days travelling to Ōarai. The staff were excellent, and when I informed them I needed one extra night due to me booking for the wrong day checking out, they were quick to prepare a new room for the one night needed.
I booked the hotel online , when I arrived I was requested to pay for my partner (the second person) ! which was shameful - humiliated and was totally taken back as it was the first time I was requested to pay for my partner which was highly irregular
Great hotel right in the centre of town.
Room was great, comfortable and quiet.
Buffet breakfast was Japanese style and very tasty.
Staff were great, especially the young lady whose English was better than my Japanese!
I would happily stay again.
The rooms are small but very cosy. Breakfast is exceptionally good. WiFi as in most locations in Japan is perfect for working/leisure. The hotel is 10min from the JR station.
