The City That Has It All

Historically known as Canton and China’s third largest city, Guangzhou is the birthplace of the most popular types of Chinese cuisine such as iconic wonton soup and dim-sum. It has an impressive skyline, some of the oldest temples in the country and busy markets with everything from tea to hi-tech electronics.

The busy city center mesmerises with its futuristic architecture and beautifully lit skyscrapers but just a short trip away is the quiet haven of Nansha Wetland, a bird sanctuary. After a visit here that rejuvenates with new energy, you can then admire the traditional Cantonese architecture of Xiguan Residence, once occupied by the ruling class.

One of the city’s most popular attractions, the Liurong Temple is an absolute must-see, dating back to the 6th century and featuring a 17-story high pagoda. Make sure you don’t miss the traditional buildings near Yide Road as they are slowly being removed from the map due to the city’s rapid growth.

From a 1000-year-old lake garden, to plenty of theme parks, relaxing rolling hills and mountains, Guangzhou seems to have it all! Add impressive street markets and shopping centers and you are in for a fascinating ride.

Guangzhou Airport is a convenient metro or taxi ride away and Booking.com provides over 390 different accommodations options for you to choose from.

The most that we could do here for 1 day is explore Beijing Lu district and eat at Michelin star restaurant Tao tao ju and buy some Chinese/Russian merchandise like chocolates and tea. It's a foodie's haven so you won't run out of things to eat! Many restaurants and shops are open until late at night as well.

Although a super crowded city as most of the major Chinese cities are we felt that it was a great place to visit. Price-wise it's quite cheap but the quality is still the same. Taxi's are a breeze with the DiDi app and also super cheap. We ended up with the luxe taxis all the time as the price as not much higher but the cars and drivers much better. Forget cash and have your AliPay setup before you go and you'll be fine almost anywhere. And to prove that point we even saw a person begging on the street using his AliPay QR code! This is our 6th major Chinese city and although they are similar Guangzhou was still different in some ways and definitely worth the trip. If you're visiting Hong Kong then take the Speed train from Kowloon - it's just 55 mins and you will do immigrations before the train. Very easy and quick

Guangzhou is a place for food.

Guangzhou is a place for food. Things are inexpensive and the city is modern. Very easy to get aorund on the metro and taxis. If you are looking for places of history, sight seeing, then this may not be teh best place. We enjoyed the river cruise at night and just wandering around the old parts opf the city. The island is worth visiting, depicting colonial buidlings and is pleasant to walk around. Take a ride to Fongshan (1 hr by car) and enjoy the local baked biscuits (very high quality).

Guangzhou is a huge city with different parts to it, i.e. luxury and downtown. It is easy to get around and find food that's not Chinese too. Those people who could speak English were very helpful which was a bonus. Didn't find the city to be cheap as we expected so our expectations were not met pricewise.

    Very big and busy city.

Very big and busy city. We stayed to spend time with family who guided us around. Imaps and google maps not accurate. Difficult to work out bus and metro unless you know someone to help. Taxis cheap though. Local food great and good value. Enjoyed the parks. Being a pedestrian requires you to be alert to all the bikes and mopeds around you on the footpath.the people were very friendly. A translator ap useful. Enjoyed Luckin coffee.

Located in the scenic Shamian Island at the heart of Guangzhou old town - former concessions given to France and the UK, hence surrounded by nineteenth century European-style buildings, the neighbourhood is great for a walk and even better at night after everything is lit up (but it's sometimes crowded with people taking photos during daytime). The hotel itself is state of the art too with top class in-house restaurants. Dined at Jade River and had yum cha (morning tea in local Cantonese) at Hongtu Hall, both of which were exceptional.

The staff is excellent and very friendly, always willing to assist the customer. The hotel is located at the old city centre, but is in the middle between the new city centre, the markets, the Canton fair with a free shuttle bus as well. The area is safe and you can feel it. I would prefer it though if they renovated it. I am staying there again on my next business trip here

This is a great priced hotel with decent amenities and shuttle bus to canton fair. The breakfast is great and not the western style but still pretty decent. Location to a coffee shop that service great pancakes over the road which is very decent. Certainly worth a stay if you’re on a mid range budget.
