Karamea is a vibrant community with a lively main street, excellent produce from a local butcher and fresh patisserie from a local baker. On Sat there was a local market with community choir singing Christmas carols. We had a delicious breakfast at Vinnies (art gallery upstairs) and an amazing family dinner at The Last Resort.

This is an untouched part of New Zealand with pristine estuaries teeming with birdlife, long stretches of coastline and beautiful bush. A place to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life and tourist meccas. A place to take time to enjoy the many facets the region has to offer.

One travel to Karamea to see the Oparara Arches which are of an exceptional beauty. Also it appeared that there were plenty of mountain bike opportunities and a great beach. Karamea is the end of the road. One the way to Karamea, we visisted the Historic Deniston Mining Museaum and Industrial Heritage. (Also very worth while!)

We drove out to the beginning of Heaphy Track to Kohaihai Shelter (end of the road!) and walked out to Scott's Beach which was absolutely beautiful. Bit of a hike and the track was very muddy with puddles and a bit slippery - but worth it. Sensational views. Also did the short Nikau Walk (easy). Because of the wet weather we did not venture further than these.
Saw lots of Wekas. Enjoyed the swing bridge and the fast moving water.
Loved the Nikau palms - reminded me of Hawaii scenes ...... in the South Island of NZ?????? Crazy.

What a fabulous area to explore - there is so much to see and do. Karamea is an absolute must do!
The beach and estuary is gorgeous and then there is the absolutely astonishing oporara basin with all the wonderful sights there. Oporara arch, mirror yarn, Moria gate arch,Fenian’s walk and the tunnel cave (take a REALLY good torch) and then there is Kohaihai and the start of the Heaphy track. A very special area!

We are Jehovah’s Witnesses and spent two days talking to people in and around Karamea. We found them friendly, very open and accommodating. One man was not interested but said if we needed the toilet or a drink just to pop back. Another lady we saw the next day at the local market, and as there was no parsley on sale she suggested we call in on our way home and she would give us some out of her garden. Lovely people.
