Surrounded by the countryside of Normandy, Caen is a proud city which pays poignant tribute to its past. It suffered greatly during World War II and although most of the structures have been carefully restored, one monument remaining partly in ruins is Saint-Étienne-le-Vieux church.
The church is across from a floral park overlooked by the stately 11th-century Abbaye aux Hommes, built by William the Conqueror, who is also buried there. His wife is buried in the equally grand Abbaye aux Dames by an even larger park to the east. Between the 2 lies another of William’s creations, the remarkably intact 11th-century Norman castle which now houses museums of Normandy history and fine art.
Another unmissable museum is the Memorial for Peace, a sensitive portrayal of the horrors of war, with particular emphasis on the D-Day landings on beaches north of the city. One road leading there passes Pegasus Bridge and the large Caen-Ouistreham passenger ferry port. The city is also served by Carpiquet Airport and a train station.
The surrounding streets are lined with shops and restaurants, and there are a few half-timbered buildings dotted around. The bars on Rue Ecuyére offer some of the best nightlife and are popular with the large student population.
Booking.com’s range of Caen accommodations includes luxury hotels, cheap B&Bs and apartments with parking.

Fantastic base , is possible to go everywhere by bus or train all over Normandy , cheap travel costs , Rouen cost the most but if you book the train 2 days ahead and don’t want a Fri- sat evening it’s about €6 one way.
Way cheaper than Bayeux with more public transport connections. Bayeux is more pretty but costs loads more. Just take the many 10 min train trips there instead! Caen has loads of cafes , restaurants and massive Sunday market. You need 3 days to do it’s major attractions and to chill in the cafes.
Places we went by bus/ train, - Ranville ( cemetery and Pegasus bridge museum) ouisteham, Honfleur, Liseaux ( Basilica) , many D Day beaches - there’s a navette bus connecting them all - use it or we will lose it! , Falaise, Mont St Michel , And of course Bayeux, Rouen and Paris . There are many other places to get to as well.

If you've read your history then you will know that Caen was bombed mercilessly during WWII, so the city is more modern looking than a lot of other French cities. That said the Abbeys and the Castle are wonderful.

A city steeped in history and something to see around every corner. It was so easy to get around entrance fees if charged were very low and the dinning scene is to die for. Very friendly people and a great base to get and see the DDay landing beaches and cemetery. I would suggest at least four days to see what this gem has to offer.

Caen is interesting, it can be seen in a couple of days, museums etc., but is also a good centre for elsewhere. Bayeux (train, forget the bus, the only complaint I have is the bad long distance bus service there, there was no interest in the passengers at all), Ouistreham (good bus links), Deauville and Hornfleur are also within reach although I did not go.
Everywhere you will find D Day museums, those I went to were very good. Bayeux, Pegasus Bridge (recommended, walk down the canal from Ouistreham and the Bunker) also the Caen Memorial which will take much of the day.

Unfortunately, we didn't get to see too much. We ran out of time, but plan to return for a longer stay as Caen is certainly worth a visit, plus the wonderful History, villages and country side are calling us back!

Everything meet Ibis Budget standarts: not more - not less. Room is small and compact, but clean, bed is comfortable, in general it is what you expect from Ibis Budget - good solution for 1 night stay after late arrival by train. It was warm enough in the room in spite of very cold night. Hotel located just in front of the train station, but the neighborhood looks safe and calm.
The hotel's location is marvelous for those traveling by train - only 2 blocks from the entrance to the main train station in Caen. Our room was reasonably large and very well maintained. We loved the buffet breakfast - there were many choices of food and everything we tried was fresh and tasty.
The room was clean, modern and functional - but of budget hotel standard. It is a functional budget hotel in the outskirts of Caen. I found that the standard of the Ace Hotel was better than that of Ibis Hotels, which I also used twice on my short Normandy vacation.
We liked the hotel a lot. The best was: very friendly and professional stuff; the most comfortable beds of our whole trip (we stayed in 9 different hotels..), the location is very central, beautiful rooms.
