Halliwell Country Inn, hotel in Howick

Set in the heart of the Midlands, Halliwell Country Inn is located 8.7 mi from Howick and 3.1 mi from Curry’s Post. This historic property is over 180 years old.

Lovely ambience. Since Covid changes are noticeable. Joe the manager and all his staff that previously there have been replaced. Breakfast used to be a buffet, then changed to a set menu and cereal included. Now just a set menu where you select one item and there is no more self serve cereal included. Dinner menu has also changed. The massive burger an all time favourite is now more expensive and much smaller and they ran out of starters and cheaper options on the night we ate there ! Rooms are starting to look a little worn down but at the price it is still a favourite place we like to call our base camp when staying in the midlands.

Howick and surroundings nice and clean, lots to see in neighbourhod of Howick eg. Midlands meander. Howick falls a disappointment, not clean, too many vendors, too many people using river as a washing bay.....Karkloof falls beautifully clean and unspoilt, good facilities.....

A great little place for holidays and there are many nature walks within a 20 minute drive. It helps to know a local who can tell you about all the great stuff that is hard to find on the internet (or all the great places that are on the internet but are now closed).

The waterfalls are amazing as is the nearby dam.

The waterfalls are amazing as is the nearby dam. People are very friendly and I enjoyed the beautiful vistas and the mist over the surrounding hills. Now I understand why so many people retire to the Midlands. I ate at several coffee shops and restaurants. I found prices to be very reasonable.

I was very disappointed about the town of Howick, especially the area around the Falls. Its full potential was never fully realized, but, even with that in mind, it is a shadow of its former, limited, glory. Roads are uneven, gardens and verges are unkept, the tearoom looked desolate and the public toilets charged R 2 with no soap, toilet paper or toilet seats. This town and the falls should and could be a tourist Mecca with tour bus upon tour bus, quaint curio shops, restaurants, etc. It is an understatement to say that I left back to Durban with sadness in my heart about his state of affairs. By the way, and without going into detail, the same applies to MidmarDam.

We had a fantastic stay at the Green Lantern in Howick. Danny is a super lovely and attentive host who lives next door. The cottage was very cozy, clean, spacious, and well-equipped. There's also a washing machine if you need to do your laundry. It has its own terrace/garden where you can enjoy the sun, have breakfast or a braai. The location is also great, a grocery store is just around the corner and Howick Falls and the Nelson Mandela Capture Site are just a short drive away. We highly recommend staying here!

An establishment steeped in history that has been well maintained. Staff friendly and helpful and the meals are well prepared and tasty, of which the cost is reasonable. Unfortunately the weather didnt play its role, so we were unable to explore the gardens and the area around the hotel, but, we will be back.
