Drostdy Hotel, hotel in Graaff-Reinet

Offering an outdoor pool, spa and on-site restaurant, Drostdy Hotel is located in the beautiful town of Graaff-Reinet, which features over 220 heritage sites.

One of South Africa's must visit country hotels. Whenever I can (and can afford it), I stay over at this lovely hotel in Graaff-Reinet - summer or winter. Be sure to explore the buildings and try the cigar lounge, which has an excellent collection of books. The restaurant is excellent, at times they have wines in the cellar that are hard to source elsewhere (apart from Franschhoek). Small art gallery and wine shop attached to the hotel. Other nice little restaurants and coffee shops within walking distance.

Everything. From the minute we arrived we were met by Rob who was so friendly. Cool history about him aswell. The House was amazing, layout, design and a delicious breakfast in the morning. What more can you ask for? Rob also helped with recommendations and alternative travel routes. Just an awesome time spent.

The owners were extremely friendly. They sat and talked with us a bit. They gave us advise to a place to eat dinner. It was within walking distance. The streets felt safe to walk at night there. Alot of police presence.

There is so much going on in this beautiful town, so much to explore and experience, excellent small restaurants and coffee shops to keep you coming back for more, I wish I had stayed longer to get to try more places but winter or summer Graaff-Reinet has something to offer every age group. The schools in the area are exceptional, my preference being Union High School as I was a border there in high school, a great choice for anyone looking for a place where children can be nurtured.

The visit to the Valley of Desolation was a highlight.

The visit to the Valley of Desolation was a highlight. The road was in good condition but did not intrude on the nature reserve objectives. Local industries must have invested a lot to keep the walkways, look-out points, parking, etc in excellent shape. Interesting information was added to metal name plackets on several trees along the footpath. My visit to the John Rupert Art Project was well worth the time.

Graaff-Reinet is a gem for anyone who loves history and (well-preserved) historic buildings. Most visitors pass through while heading toward the coast or back to Joburg and drive straight through the centre of town and out the other side - but the best of what this city has to offer is OFF the main road... on the side streets. So many beautifully preserved historic buildings, unexpected coffee shops and galleries, museums and places of interest. Definitely one of South Africa's more charming small towns (for those who would just take a moment to leave the main road and LOOK).

It's a lovely town with so much history to it.

It's a lovely town with so much history to it. The museums, while needing modernization and some TLC, have some interesting stuff particularly at the military museum. I would have loved to have had the time to visit some of the places where the Brits ambushed Commandant Gideon Scheepers whom they executed after a military court found him guilty of war crimes - they actually had him sit on a chair next to a grave and then the firing squad shot him. Worthy of remembering these guys, (Local African people, Brits and Boers) who found themselves caught up in the first war of liberation against British imperialism. Their sacrifices and keeping their names and the history alive is so important. Then to bring matters more current, a visit to the Robert Sobukwe permanent exhibition is important to help understand the contribution of one of Graaf Reinet's most famous sons.

Everything…communication was excellent between the establishment and us. Check in was a breeze. The rooms were so clean and provided all the home comforts. The beds were comfortable with crisp linen. The host had suggestions for us, including using their braai facilities which are available, for sourcing dinner in town. All in all, a gem in Graaff-Reinet.We will stay here again when ever we pass this way again.

We love the old-world style and charm, the serene gardens and the luxurious atmosphere. The breakfast is a delectable taste treat. This hotel is different to all the cookie cutter hotels and is in a class of its own. It's wonderful that South-Africans can also enjoy their heritage.
