Chania is a beautiful, mostly Venetian, harbour town in NW Crete. There are many wonderful buildings, particularly in the Old Town and some really good restaurants. Try Salis, Oinopoeio or To Maridaki. The buzzing atmosphere around both harbours makes it a thrill just to walk about. This place has style sophistication and a magical beauty.

Walking through the streets of the old town was wonderful, turning each corner to discover a new quaint coffee or craft shop spurred us on, to discover even more. We were never disappointed with the service or the food. The bus service to neighbouring towns runs frequently and they are clean and luxurious. Try the crispy croissants at the bus stop cafe - they are delicious. The port is beautiful, tranquil and a perfect place for a coffee stop with adjoining bakery. The walk along the waterfront is lengthy for the enthusiastic walkers, we enjoyed the great views.

Chania is so lovely.
Chania is so lovely. The walkable waterfront was really great with lots of restaurant options and shops that were still open even in winter. Loved wandering around here. Amazingly there were lots of parking options close to the old town. I ate at Salis on the waterfront and I would highly recommend. I drove out to Elafonissi Beach and enjoyed a last day of summer before heading home to snow and rain 🙁. I would love to visit Crete again !

We go to Crete every year (sometimes twice a year) and Chania is always on our itinerary. Lovely old town, beautiful Venetian harbor, good food, friendly service. Our favorite restaurant has become Restoran Tamam http://www.tamamrestaurant.com/ very good local food and nice service. Since the place is very popular, I definitely recommend making a reservation. I definitely recommend visiting the Archaeological Museum of Chania - the museum is located outside the city centre. It is one of the most significant cultural centres in Crete, with a huge collection of ancient findings from various periods that offer insight into the island's rich history. A magnificent view over much of the city, especially the seafront, opens from the terrace of the museum cafe. I also recommend Studio Oxo Nou - which is also located away from the city center, but it's a cool little hipster place on a cute little beach. This is a place where you don't often meet tourists.

Chania old town is really worth seeing and the museums very good, if you are interested in naval history , which we are.
We ate in many restaurants including the hotel, they were possibly the best meals we had.
It's very easy to get around the old town, any other trips we took by taxi which are very reasonable.

Busy town, good museums especially the maritime museum.
Busy town, good museums especially the maritime museum.
The local bus system was confusing, not always clear where the bus stops were.
Town beach was OK but small, the next one within walking distance was incredibly crowded, even in October. We eventually found Golden Beach which is a short bus ride away. Uncrowded, clean, trees providing shade. A decent cafe right on the beach. Worth going to…great.
Chania harbour, a great spot, but lined with an excessive number of restaurants. Each clearly showing a menu with their offerings. Unfortunately as soon as you look at the menu you are pounced on by a waiter trying to get your custom.
The food was generally excellent, especially the pasta dishes.
Excellent cafes with great coffee and pastries.
The main covered market is closed for maintenance?? So that was disappointing. The fruit /veg street market was wonderful.
Plenty of good shops selling leather ware, bargain handbags and sandals.
Be aware that if you want to visit Knossos palace and the museum in Heraklion, it is a 2 hour drive. We gave up trying to organise our own journey and bought into a day coach tour. It was the easiest way.

An incredible hotel situated in the heart of the old town of Chania, Crete. The suites have the most beautiful panoramic view of the port and the lighthouse. They are spacey and have everything a visitor could ask for, during his accommodation.
We definitely recommend this hotel and we will stay there again.
