As an American the bang for your buck is amazing. I was however very disappointed with the lack of good restaurants that have air conditioning. Its very hot and when I eat I do not particularly do not like to sweat. Shopping is like a big flea market, not many nice stores but then that is not what we went for.

Off season is slower, but returned and found it vibrant as Christmas neared. Lots of places to visit nearby. The best deal was a self organized day trip to Taganga, a cheap taxi ride away. Went to Playa Blanca as well, a very family friendly beach. Great to see the kiddies having so much fun. Enjoyed my morning coffee on the Malecon and then returning for the sun set. Ate lots of food from the street vendors.

Santa Marta is dusty, dirty, vibrant and fun.
Santa Marta is dusty, dirty, vibrant and fun. It has a fascinating colonial and indiginous history, which you can learn about in the excellent (and free) Museo del Oro. Walking around the streets of the historic centre is a must, including the cathedral square. There are lots of great bars and restaurants, which really come alive in the evenings. There are also some hidden gems, such as the boutique clothes shops. The Marina is comfortable and more modern but we gravitated back to the historic centre for the buzz. Our family really enjoyed our stay and were sad to leave.

The beaches to the south of Santa Marta, and those near Tayrona National Park, are gorgeous. The town of Santa Marta, itself, is a big, noisy, dirty town and I've been told the beaches aren't great. But I stayed at Bello Horizonte and then at a hostel south of Rodadero and the beaches were great.

I stayed in areas between the airport and Santa Marta.
I stayed in areas between the airport and Santa Marta. I am glad I didn’t stay in the city, it is big and dirty. But the surrounding areas I stayed in, Bello Horizonte and just south of Gaira, had lovely calm beaches.
The bus drivers were mostly very kind but a few of them must have had to pass a stupid test or were just plain mean, as I often was unclear as to where to get off, and some ignored requests for help.

My wife and I staid here for her birthday. The property was very clean and the amenities were great. The staff provided us with contacts for transportation into Santa Marta and Rodadero. We never mentioned it was my wife's birthday to the staff, but on the morning of her birthday they came out with a cake and sang happy birthday to her. Can't recommend the hotel enough if you are looking for a quiet and peaceful place to get away too for a vacation.
The best hotel in Santa Marta, The hotel is recently remodeled and the taste in every detail of the room makes it very cozy. its location is perfect, in the heart of the city to enjoy the best restaurants and bars in the city, we were able to take advantage of to walk and see the beautiful architecture of the city.
The staff was very friendly and went out of their way to make our stay as best as possible!
The colonial style hotel is perfectly located for visiting historical Santa Marta, along with being just across the street from an expansive clean beach area. It's a short (10 minute) walk to the Plaza de los Novios which is surrounded by small restaurants and bars. The staff was very friendly and helpful; the gardens and property are tropical and well-maintained.
The hotel in general was very nice, looking beautiful, well-taken care of, the pool and jacuzzi were outstanding with a nice view of Santa Marta. We loved the sunset.
The room was fine.
