The lady and her little dog greeted us upon arrival and was very friendly. We met the partner later on and he was just as welcoming. The room was clean and quiet. This is a nice place to stay if you want to feel the home like feeling.

The breakfast was AOK - a self-serve buffet with several options. This hotel is in downtown Sydney, close to the big violin, and to our choice of restaurant for Thanksgiving dinner when so many places were booked - the Lebanese Flower (just a short walk away).

Back Home Lodging, hotel in Sydney

Located in Dutch Brook, 6.6 km from Membertou Trade & Convention Centre, Back Home Lodging provides accommodation with a garden, free private parking and a shared lounge.

breakfast was great, the home was spotlessly clean with lots of little extras. however communication with the owner was a challenge. We were greeted by the owner's teenage son who showed us our room and designated bathroom which was just out our door. ( only one room has an ensuite). the next morning we got up for our 0900 breakfast as we were told it would be served at 0900. there was no one to be found. the owner didn't get my email from several days prior plus her son confirming breakfast with us so we didn't get breakfast that day. then that evening when we came home late after a concert, all our toiletries were not in our designated bathroom( there were someone else's toiletries in "our" bathroom, no note, no text/email. We had to ring their doorbell at 2300 to get someone to help us. Again the teenage son came to tell us his mom changed our bathroom. ( she had mentioned that to us the day before that she might have to change it. I have no idea why she was changing it, we had booked for 3 nights). apparently, she gave our bathroom to the new guests. our new designated bathroom was now down the hall, through the living room, into the laundry room, and to the back door bathroom! It was very awkward the next morning when I walked through the living room while guests were sitting in the living room waiting for breakfast and I was in my pj's! ( the guests were up early and expected breakfast earlier as they wanted to leave so they were ready and waiting in the living room). When we left Delores( our host) apologized for her lack of communication but it made the whole visit quite frustrating. we're not sure if we would recommend it to our friends.... maybe but with a warning!

When I left (For the second year running) there are no facilities to obtain refreshments if you have a long wait. (I arrived because of check out time 11:30 and the flight did not leave until 16:45) That is a long wait without the ablitly to have some refreshments.

Sydney has a nice heritage section, worth visiting.

Sydney has a nice heritage section, worth visiting. It is also only a short drive from the Louisbourg Fortress, where costumed characters give visitors interesting stories of the French settlers in the 1700s and descendants of the indigenous inhabitants tell their customs. Several other historical venues, as well as beautiful drives are near Sydney.

Sydney is noticeably dirty in tourist areas along waterfront and main streets, no apparent effort to clean up litter and cigarette butts in public and business areas. We found it curious that they’re doing improvements in some downtown area and yet past improvements are left to deteriorate. Especially benches and fencing near and around the waterfront. Another thing that really stood out was the lack of apparent event planning. There were at least 3 events going on while we were there and it was virtually impossible to get to the event we attended on the waterfront.

Sydney will never be what it was back in the 50 and 60s., with the Steel Plant, fishing and the closing of the coal mines in the area but if you have lived here in the past you can still enjoy the scenery.

The hotel is full of charm, and they even have a resident cat! Awesome decor, really cool (original?) features. My 8 year old is autistic; the owner was amazing and answered a million obscure questions he had. Fresh hot breakfast was included; much better than I've ever seen at a big chain. The bedroom was huge, and the bathroom was newly renovated. We'll definitely be back!

The restaurant provided a 10% discount for hotel guests and the meal was fantastic. Best meal I've had in a long time. The breakfast that was included included eggs, sausage and potatoes, not just a continental breakfast.
