Loved the town. It was very quaint and so beautiful. Easy access to all the attractions within the township. Would have loved to have headed out into the surrounding countryside. We stayed 2 nights but would have happily stayed another two,

Takayama is a beautiful town full of fascinating well preserved historical houses and streets, amazing temples and shrines, and exceptional artisan crafts. The people are friendly and the area was fun and easy to explore. It's a nice size after spending time in Japan's larger cities. It would be especially beautiful in the winter and it's a place we'd like to come back to again.

Our favorite part of Takayama was exploring the old streets and morning market. You can walk to most areas, but there are also buses if walking is a challenge. We decided to go to Hida no Sato instead of Shirakawa-go. This turned out to be a great decision! When we were waiting at the bus station for our local bus, two full busloads of tourists were departing for Shirakawa-go. There was hardly anyone at Hida no Sato! There were some crafts and activities to participate in and several old preserved gassho-zukuri.

Takayama was a super cute town!
Takayama was a super cute town! The old town was great and it was like what I pictured Kyoto to be like. There were plenty of people and travelers for sure, but I think the town is probably underrated for international visitors. I had not even heard of it. I'm planning to go back for more exploration. Really enjoyed the nearby Hida no Sato museum.

Enjoyed the shops and Miyagawa Morning Market and it was close to other shops. Didn't care for Jinyamae Morning Market because there were not many vendors and not many other stores in the area.
Wish the stores stayed open a little later in the evening to visit. Not many restaurants open after 6pm.

I cannot rate this place high enough. Has it's own onsen; rooms of the high standard you always get here; walking distance from the station; very central to the shops and markets. Staff recommended a bar for a quiet drink and "Tonio" turned out to be a great little watering hole. Tell the owner you're a Metallica fan and you've made a friend. Takayama was an overnight excursion for me, but this hotel, coupled with a delightful little town covered in snow, then a soak in the onsen, was a high point of my japan trip.
This is the perfect retreat hotel in the mountains. Old style Japanese ryokan with the friendliest staff. Food was amazing. The rooms are huge! And we had both western beds and futons! The outside onsen is such a delight and you can relax in it under the stars. It’s out of the way so a bit tricky to get to with public transport but that’s what we wanted for a trip to the mountains.
Traditional ryokan with great attention. The staff was extremely friendly and provided an excellent service. The breakfast and specially the dinner was fantastic, the best meal by far we had in Japan.
The onsen of the hotel is small but very nice. Access to the onsen of the Alpina hotel is provided as well, which is bigger and having nice views of the city.
A very authentic experience. You will find yourself in a traditional house with great shared spaces and most welcoming people. And for the price per night its deffinitely the best hotel we have stayed in Japan. (And we stayed also in some quite pricey Ryokans )
Fantastic location by the river. Close to historic sections of Takayama.
Lovely, traditional old ryokan. Nice Japanese breakfast (western also available).
We loved our room overlooking the river.
