Our room was very spacious, with a very comfortable bed, sitting area and fabulous balcony with an ocean view. The staff were very thoughtful and welcoming. I contacted them at the very last minute about doing a game drive as they came up with several options within a few hours. Ultimately we chose to just play at the beach, which is just a couple minutes walk away. Lots of easy fast food options for kids as well as nicer restaurants.
The staff also let us keep our room into the afternoon so we could spend time on the beach on the last day. This was so kind. Each staff person was so warm.

Safety: From our limited knowledge, Summerstrand is the nicest part of Port Elizabeth. We had been warned about safety issues before arriving, but thought they were overblown. Where we stayed in Summerstrand felt safe, but we were warned by every Uber driver and every waiter/waitress about safety issues, making sure that we never walk alone, and to be extremely careful. It put a damper on our visit.
Shopping: We had delayed buying very much until we reached Port Elizabeth, which was the last place we visited in South Africa. This was a big mistake since various handicrafts / artwork that we had seen in other places - particularly Cape Town - were not available in Port Elizabeth. It was surprising how little we were able to find, and wound up having to buy things in the Johannesburg airport on our stopover there.

Summerstrand was all we had hoped for - great guesthouses...
Summerstrand was all we had hoped for - great guesthouses where we stayed in Dec 2023 - Jan 2024. Shops and beaches within easy walking distance. Friendly locals. Great food and fantastic Christmas and New Year held by all! Will return any time!

Prefer the other end of Summerstrand that is less busy … our walk along the beachfront Saturday afternoon was spoilt by litter and drinking and didn’t feel that safe … but we are from Durban so are used to this. We came to Summerstrand for the Ironman a few years ago and a big clean up had clearly been done then.

The weather was a bit bad that weekend but nothing could take our smiles away. We felt safe walking and even on the beach. I've never seen such clean streets and sidewalks and beach! Well done to every person who is involved in keeping it clean. Everyone we met was so friendly, from staff where we stayed to people on the street. Everyone jogging in mornings and I'm so thankful that my first time alone with my little girl was such a fantastic experience for her and me! Not enough space to type everything and wished I could download our feelings for everyone to see what a great time we had!

Summerstrand is a clean and safe place.
Summerstrand is a clean and safe place. The beach is clean with a little pool which is fed by the breaking of waves over the rocks, where children can play in. There is a place "Something good" where one can have breakfast and lunch on the beachfront.

It was rundown.
It was rundown. I was shocked at the state of where we stayed in PE.
Sadly there are homeless people everywhere and we got approached by beggars while sitting on the stoep. I did not expect to see so many empty and broken buildings.
