York Minster
All piercing spires and vaulted ceilings, York Minster is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. The most important Anglican church outside London, this ancient cathedral dates back to the 12th century and houses some of the world’s finest medieval stained glass. While adults gaze in awe at its grand interior, the youngsters can have fun hunting for the gargoyles protecting the facade.

Splendid! One of the largest gothic cathedrals in the world.
Splendid! One of the largest gothic cathedrals in the world. AKA St. Peter's.
Not inexpensive but well worth the visit for the history and the architecture. Stained glass windows are remarkable.
And there is, of course, the story told regarding the fire on the 11th of July 1984 which burned the South Transept and destroyed the Rose window. On July 9th David Jenkins was consecrated Bishop of Durham at the Minster. He was rather controversial in his views and a recent speech delivered suggested his disbelief in the Virgin birth and of Christ walking on water. On the 11th of July York Minster was hit by a bolt of lightning!

From the exterior, it is enormous in size and upon entering, the vastness is in no way lessened, with vast expanses filled with architectural wonder and stained Glass Windows, each of which have considerable religious and personals significance. It is a place that takes considerable time to explore and absorb, and that may a venture to the top of the tower, that will leave you breathless (literally).
A visit to York could never be complete without a visit to the Minster.

Get there for one of the tours, we were lucky as we got there just as one was starting. It lasted for an hour and was really interesting. Also one of the tips was to go to the basement for the museum.

Incredible!
Incredible! Magnificent structure of Peace and History which welcomed people of all faiths and none. Entrance fee circa £12.50 - good value and helps maintain the history of York for future generations. Your receipt/entrance ticket is also reusable for entry several times for a year which is very helpful as there is so much to see and learn - and cannot be totally absorbed in the space of a quick visit. Packed with interesting historical facts - suitable for Adults and children. Helpful & informative Guides/Stewards. Beautiful stained-glass windows; scheduled services welcome visitors. There are many opportunities to sit quietly in some of the small chapels - Peaceful and contemplative. A must see!

Absolutely devoid of any feeling of God.
Absolutely devoid of any feeling of God.
Stained glass not glorious like other places.
Lots of bishops glorifying themselves in expensive tombs.
First place I had no wish to light a candle to a loved one.
Not worth the £12 do the Jorvik ride instead

This is a magnificent building.
This is a magnificent building. Take your time going through it to admire the beautiful forms of the building, the variety of designs in the windows, on the walls, even in some of the pillars that support the roof. There are enormous windows at the east (altar) end that are worth special attention. The style of the building is called Gothic, not because it was built by Goths, but because of a historical error. It is elegant and refined, not at all like what people think of in relation to Goths today.

The hotel was in a great location, only 5 minutes in to the city. The room was excellent with a fabulous view over the river to the York Minster. Everything was very clean and fresh, the bed very comfortable and the room was spacious and well equipped. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the breakfast was excellent. We would thoroughly recommend the Radisson.
The staff were amazing. A special shout out to Frank who was absolutely amazing. We had an awful journey and he took the stress right out by being so kind and considerate.
Also, the hotel is in the most amazing position. Right next to York Minster.
The apartment's views are SUPERB. The apartment as a whole is very comfortable, stylish, with huge windows and great light. The location is terrific--close to food, shopping, and the museums, York Minster, medieval walls, and the historic town center. The management was also helpful and responsive when we needed to extend our stay unexpectedly. All in all, this was a truly great experience.
Perfect location for sightseeing, just a few minutes walk to York Minster. Hotel has its own car park with plenty of spaces (paid a small parking fee which is waived if you book directly through the hotel). Beds very comfortable and room was clean. Staff couldn’t have been any nicer. Great choice of buffet and/or cooked Breakfast.
The apartment was very nice and modern with a view of the York Minster. The location was right outside the main street into York with easy access to the Train Station. Everything was within walking distance of the apartment.
Very nice hotel living up to it's name. The room was spacious, clean and well appointed with a view overlooking the city wall. Easy walking distance to/from the train station and to the York Minster and York city center. Close access to walk the city wall. Not far from many restaurants.
The reception was very welcoming, staff fantastic friendly helpful.this hotel right by the river not far to walk to the attractions, lots to do and see,York minster is a must see,Betty's famous tea room ,shambles.shops open top bus etc
The location of this hotel was very convenient. I did have to pay to park at the pub just down the road, but the hotel is really close to medieval York. The cost for parking was less than shown here on this site. For the two nights I was there, my car stayed parked as I wandered The Shambles, York Minster and the other historic places on foot.
The room was very well furnished and clean. The bathroom was also a very good size with a nice large shower. The tea and coffee in the room were replenished and the room was cleaned and beds made and towels changed which was very much appreciated. The staff were also friendly. The hotel was handy for the Jorvik Viking Centre, York Castle Museum, York Minster, Clifford Tower and the Shambles.
Gorgeous historical hotel with an excellent location. Super quick walk to York Minster. Excellent breakfast. Very helpful, friendly staff. We had a family suite in the basement - the Bunker Room. It was really unique and fun, quite cozy and comfy too!
