FAQs about hotels in Merida

Small City with Impressive Roman Past

Mérida was founded as Augusta Emerita in 25 BC, the capital of the ancient Roman province of Lusitania. Located almost half-way between Madrid and Lisbon, it is nowadays an important historic centre, and the capital of the Spanish region of Extremadura. The ‘Archaeological Ensemble of Mérida’ has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The city was founded in order to protect the Guadiana River pass, becoming the largest city on the Iberian Peninsula. Visigoths, Moors, the Christian ‘reconquista’, and the Napoleonic invasion left their mark too, and the city is nowadays home to the most complete Roman remains in Spain.

Its historic centre displays a mix of all these cultures, with the Roman Theatre and the Roman Bridge standing out. The Alcazaba is the old fortress of Roman origin, successively rebuilt by Visigoths and Moors. Renaissance, Gothic and Baroque buildings, as well as typical cobbled streets complete the picture. Some of the most charming hotels and B&Bs in Mérida are located in the Old Town.

The easiest way to get to the city is flying in to Seville or Madrid, and then by train to the local railway station. Whether you’re searching the best hotels or budget accommodation, don’t miss the Mérida deals available on Booking.com!

Just a one night stay, wish we could have stayed longer, such a beautiful charming town rich is roman history, we brought our bikes and cycled around the most famous site which was like a treasure hunt! The teatro Roman amphitheatre was lovely but the steps are made of fake stone. If you have been to the Colosseum this seems a bit tame. We found the Acueducto de los Milagros interesting as well as the Casa del Mitreo de los Columbarios- the ruins of a Roman home. We were disappointed with the contents of the Alcazabar - the only thing of interest inside was the underground water cistern with steps leadinng down into it. It's more interesting from the outside

Merida is full of Roman ruins, more than any other city in Spain. All sites have easy access and are within walking distance. Great for history buffs! Streets of Merida have a happy vibe with people enjoying themselves and friends. A worthwhile city to visit in Spain.

Merida is a beautiful city, full of history and amazing architecture. I stayed just for a couple of days but I wish I could have stayed longer. It was a fantastic experience to be in a place with so many wonderful ancient places: The Roman Theatre and the amphitheater, The Roman Aqueduct, the Circus, the Citadel, the Roman Museum… well, I just loved the city! The only thing I would suggest is to visit the place during spring or fall… the summer is extremely hot.

The history very interesting we enjoyed a walk through the town and the alkazar very much. But so unfriendly, we went into 2 bars to get a coffee and were ignored so after 20 mins we left. In one of them we had actually been shown to a table. The parador was disappointing to say the least , service appalling!

One full day is the minimum to visit the top tourist spots.

One full day is the minimum to visit the top tourist spots. Buy a ticket for all sites - it has no validity limit, you can visit each site once, but it does not have to be even the same year! So no stress, you will want to return here anyway :) Nice size for walking. Good food.

The location was great. Not exactly in the city center, but in less than 10 minutes you're in the heart of Merida. The hotel is just on the other side of La Moreria. The parking lot is spacious and the stuff is really friendly.

The valet parking service was excellent. Parts of central Mérida were closed to traffic for road works but the hotel driver took the car to a nearby car park and brought it back when we left.
