This magnificent archaeological site was uncovered during a freak landslide in 1972. Built during the 2nd-century reign of Emperor Trajan, the amphitheatre is now one of Bulgaria’s most impressive landmarks. In the evening, the pillars and carvings are lit up by bright lights, and you can almost imagine the 6,000 spectators from centuries past crowding its ringed seating.
