Kunming is an easy way to to get a feel for China-not too big but still the buzz of an Asian city. One big bonus is the quiet roads as all the traffic is electric! The metro is very cheap and efficient and there is a good connection from the airport.
Vibrant old town with food everywhere. Just be aware that they charge a fortune for beer.

stayed at ancient town, very convenient for food.
stayed at ancient town, very convenient for food. But bear in mind cars not allowed in ancient town, accommodation send luggage carts. Communication in chinese important as they meet you somewhere at the entrance and bring you in with your luggages. No breakfast where I stayed but as early as 7am, shops for breakfast are opened. Need local sim card to get around by Didi. Need an app in english but couldn't get translation. Thankfully spouse could read chinese, did all the ride hailing and maps in chinese. If there was an app in English, would help non speaking/reading chinese. Suggest use a reputable tour company for private tours and plan everything if you can't use mandarin.

Mostly everything was good!...
Mostly everything was good!... I agree it's a five star hotel. What it wasn't so great is that the staff in general doesn't show to be HAPPY!... It's unusual to see SMILES!!!... Also, there's some mosquitos and a few flies around. Hahaha...

It's a laid back city.
It's a laid back city. Slower pace than the other metropolises. I went in May and the weather was beautiful. It's a walkable city but I highly recommend using the Chinese APPs to rent e-bikes. It's the best way to see the city. That's pretty much what I did for my four days there. For local restaurants, get some good recommendations from the staff where you are staying. If you want some good Western food, Salvador's is a good option. Also, Wooden Paradise a good cocktail bar with cheap happy hour deals and a friendly owner. Juan'er is a great cafe that uses Yunnan beans. I didn't visit any special sights, except for Green Park, which is your standard big city park, so I can't comment on them.

Kunming is a non-touristy town that people often pass through. This is such a pity because we were pleasantly surprised by the beautiful parks, the calm atmosphere of the locals playing cards and games, the cute cafes, and the interesting restaurants. Kunming has everything you need but it is toned down compared to other Chinese cities which is what we wanted as we live in Guangzhou. Salvador’s restaurant is a must visit as is Humdinger for a local craft beer. Did I mention that the weather is perfect? It is known for being a city of ‘eternal spring’ for its gorgeous weather.

The set-up around a central decorative pool is nice. The service personnel are very friendly and carry your luggage to your room. Parking is not a problem. You can leave your car in front of the property entrance. There is a small village behind the homestay hotel with restaurants and small shops. The airport is relatively near, so this place might be an option if you need to stay overnight close to the airport. Still will need a taxi.
Friendly host, good for short stay while transiting near the airport premises, provided transport to and fro from KunMing airport. Rooms are very clean, and very beautifully decorated. I was given a room at the roof top that was so spacious, there is even an open area where there is bathtub.
Very nicely decorated, pleasant hotel that's in a little town. The buildings are all older refurbished buildings and it feels very cosy. Great service, includes free airport pickup and transport to airport the next day.
The room was located on 21st floor with a fair view of the city except an empty building blocked a partial view from my room. The location was great, Kunming railway station is within 15 15-minute drive from the hotel.
