A typical big city where you can find everything. Among the diverse restaurants, there are exceptionally good Japanese and Thai cuisines. The large market is a bit disappointing as we expected something similar to Marrakesh, Istanbul, or Erbil. However, most of the non-food items here are low-quality Chinese products. Handcrafted goods are sorely missing. When traveling around the city, it’s best to use Uber (which works perfectly alongside tuk-tuks) because regular street tuk-tuk drivers tend to overcharge tourists significantly. Overall, it’s a bustling city that’s definitely worth 2-3 days but not much more. In the larger malls, you can find global brands, although at roughly European prices.
We hired a tuk tuk driver for 3hrs which cost $50 and included entrance fees into the Buddhist and Hindu temples, this was well worth it as we wouldn't have known where to go or what we were looking at.
We hired a car with driver to take us sigthseeing round the city. Visited the gold temple and the independent monument, the golf club but regretted not gone up the Lotus Tower, which we could see at night its changing of colours of the rainbow from our hotel pool. The museum is worth a visit.
Colonial charm and waterfront views are hard to pass up on . Sri Lankan culture, food people are great - gentle and alluring. Worth a visit as it is little known and needs to be experienced and discovered in person. Tuk tuks are great to experience for short local rides. Check out the historical sites - Dutch fort etc and try the local food to understand the culture and the diversity of people. My favourite thing about Colombo is it is city full of surprises. it is in a state of transition from deep slumber and a brand new identity.
Visiting Family & friends. Great places all around in and out of Colombo. Variety of food choices street food to High end restaurants. Back packing to 5star accommodation. People are friendly & helpful
Plenty of nice hotels around Colombo. Interesting sights. Not a great city for nightlife. Good place for sundowners in Colombo - Kingsbury, Galle Face and Mount Lavinia Hotels. Some good shopping for housewares at Barefoot Shop/Cafe and Paradise Road shop. There is a jewelry shop called Christina next to Barefoot Cafe on the main road that is worth a look. You'll have to negotiate. If you are looking for good beaches you have to go South. Uber works well. You can get Uber right from the airport, there is a dedicated pick up spot. There is also a local app called Pick Me.
Honestly, everything was fine - the pool area is nice, checkin was fast and easy and the employees were nice - its just a bit too expensive for what was offered. The pictures are all accurate but it was somehow still less luxurious than we expected. We have liked other hotels in Sri Lanka which cost less a lot better. We didnt book the breakfast and only stayed one night so I cant say much about the surroundings. There is a shop and few restaurants around, but I personally wouldnt stay in Colombo if you dont have to :)
Colombo
Aathma House provided us with a unique stay in Colombo. Only 45 minutes from the airport (at night) and the most lovely staff who go out of their way to make you feel comfortable! The house is decorated with so much love, we kept seeing new things and never stayed anywhere like it! We really enjoyed the beautiful swimming pool and enjoyed the best Sri Lankan dinner at night and delicious breakfast out on the terrace in the morning. Highly recommended and we will definitely be back! Thank you team Aathma!
Fort, Colombo
This hotel felt like an oasis of calm. It was the best hotel we stayed in during our stay in Sri Lanka. The room was small but spotlessly clean, and the bathroom was fab. There were no windows, but this added to the peace, stopped the mosquitos & made it cooler. There was a safe and somewhere to hang clothes! Very close to restaurants and bars. The staff were happy to store our luggage as we arrived too early to check in. We definitely recommend this hotel.
Hotel is ideally located quite close to colombo fort railway station and galle face and nearby to gangaramaya temple. The hotel is neat and clean and well maintained. The property though a heritage building, its interiors are well upgraded to provide the modern facilities. The breakfast was good, particularly the sri lankan cuisine. The staff are well behaved and helpful and provided packed breakfasts on two early morning trips.
We chose this hotel for the last night of our stay as, generally, we found the hotel standards in Sri Lanka quite poor, and wanted somewhere nice. The hotel is in a good location. It is situated in a shopping mall featuring luxury brand shops and eateries. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The gym and swimming pool are nice. The bathrooms are nice and we had a good view of the sea from our room.
I recently stayed at Amari Hotel Colombo and it was a delightful experience! The hotel is newly opened, featuring clean and well-organized rooms with stunning ocean views. The hospitality from the staff was exceptional, making us feel welcome throughout our stay. Overall, I highly recommend Amari Colombo for anyone looking for a luxurious and comfortable stay in Sri Lanka!
I had a great stay at City Hotel Colombo 02 for one night. The bed was very comfortable, ensuring a restful sleep. The location is convenient, with a supermarket nearby, which was really handy. The staff were incredibly helpful, and the receptionists were especially kind and welcoming. Overall, a pleasant experience—highly recommended!
The rooftop pool and bar was amazing. Incredible views of both Colombo and the sea. The room has great decor and had everything you needed, you need to check out the toilet! All the staff were really kind and helpful. We had an excellent stay and would recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Colombo
It was the best hotel to stay in colombo. The pool is imazing and stunning and the food in the chinese restaurant is very delicious The staff is helpfull and smiling. The hotel is verey clean and beautiful Thank you again and hope to come to visit you next year.
This is an old villa converted into a boutique hotel with massive rooms. We loved it. Staff was super helpful and kind. It's fairly close to a lot of places we wanted to go in Colombo. For the money we paid, it was probably our best stay in Sri Lanka.
The location and history of the hotel is unparalleled! It’s a refreshing break from the heat and bustle of Colombo. The dining options were some of the best we experienced whilst in Sri Lanka. The staff couldn’t do enough, they were so welcoming.
Amazing old hotel that was once the darling of Colombo. Has seen better times but still retains all of its charm. Excellent location, big room good breakfast.
Unlike other hotels everything works. Bed very comfortable - best sleep in my 3 week journey in Sri Lanka. Swimming pool great - great views over the city.
Amazing hotel with Amazing staff, best bed in Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 Brilliant roof top swimming pool and evening roof top bar.
Boutique hotel nested in the center of Colombo. The room was very spacious and chic. The staff extremely agreeable.
