What a charming town.
What a charming town. The pedestrian streets are full of shops, restaurants, wine bars, bakeries -- you name it. The city has a nice blend of historical buildings and modern amenities. And the view of the Pyrenees is spectacular. We were there in a less-busy season, but there is still lots of energy, and people out & about. Make sure you pay attention to shop & restaurant closing hours & days -- you may have to plan ahead a little. It's a great jumping-off place to explore the mountains -- and make sure you visit the whitewater park (Parc des Eaux Vives). We would go back to Pau in a heartbeat,

A wonderful city to visit!
A wonderful city to visit! We arrived in glorious sunshine and the view towards the Pyrenees was stunning!
There are many places to eat. We ate in Les Papilles Insolites close by the Ibis hotel. The restaurant was quirky and reasonably priced - fabulous food and friendly service.
We only stayed for one night in Pau but wished we could have stayed longer to explore the city properly.

We chose Pau as a good stop-off point between Hendaye and Toulouse.
The city has a lot to offer with the chateau, cathedral and the River Gave running through it. It's a very pretty place with the backdrop of the Pyrenees. We discovered it's an important centre for kayaking and happened to be there the day the Olympic torch went through the city on its way to Paris 2024.
We tried to hire a car one day, but neither Hertz nor Avis could accommodate us, so if you're planning to hire a car, we'd recommend doing it ahead of time. We were there two days and two nights and I felt a third night would have been good.

Pau is a great city to visit, full of restaurants/cafes and boutique shops. The chateau is well worth a visit. The esplanade provides great views of the Pyrenees and the Beaumont Park/Villa area is well worth a walk. Lourdes is about 1/2 hour by car and Jurancon wine area is right on the doorstep. The indoor market is one of the best we have visited in France, with an amazing array of delicious produce. Overall we found this a vivrant enjoyable place to stay.

This was a tip top stop off location on our trip from the UK to Spain.
Lovely pool, relaxed, peaceful setting. The best of superking beds, crisp linens, quality pillows.
And situated within the most delightful of urban out of town locations - clean, superbly landscaped, speed controlled avenues. Pau council bravo!
Sundowners and breakfast were memorable.
Great staff, friendly and all personable.
Easy to access, on the outskirts of Pau. Convenient stopover before crossing the Pyrenees. Provided all the basics. Private parking near the front door of the hotel. Kettle and snacks provided in the room was a plus. Restaurant onsite (we did not use it, but we could have). It happened to be near two stages of the Tour de France, which added interest. Helpful host.
I like this hotel, its my second time here. The room was spacious . clean comfy. The staff were very nice and it has 24 hour reception. It has on site parking and there were no problems booking a space. Its right in the centre of town and we ate at a pub just round the corner.
Spacious apartment in centre of Pau, very well equipped with everything you need.
We were grateful to have free parking in a city location! Thank you. 👍
