While the exact date of the first permanent settlement of what would become Atlantic City is unknown, it is widely assumed that Jeremiah Leeds built and occupied an all-year residence on the island in 1783. However, it was not until 1850 that the notion of developing the area into a resort town developed, and the name Atlantic City was chosen in early 1853.
