One of the darkest chapters in Bamberg's history is the witch hunts, to which hundreds of citizens fell victim in the 17th century. The hunt for witches and sorcerers was by no means limited to red-haired women or older mothers, as common clichés would have you believe, but rather included men and women from all social classes, right up to the mayors of Bamberg. Anyone who ended up in the “Trudenhaus”, the Bamberg witch prison, was as good as lost.
