Personally, I feel Udon Thani is a pretty quiet city. But I found many restaurants have very fascinating concepts e.g. Madam Patay. You should not miss to try one of Namnueng shop i.e. VT Namenueng, it is originally from Udon Thani. Lots of temples for you to explore. The attractions are pretty far from city so you should well plan a trip and a length of your stay.
Busy Thai city, homeless people sleeping next to shopping malls selling clothes 95% of native Thais could never afford. The hotel we stayed at was on Sampanthamit Street, which is sexpat and sex tourist street., there's one in most cities in Thailand. Ignore the girls and they'll ignore you. These streets usually have good restaurants owned by foriegners. We ate at the Brickhouse just over the road from the hotel, really nice but far too much food. My husband has eaten at the pizza restaurant exactly oposite Brickhouse, he often joins bike rides to Udon and has been raving about the pizzas for years. (We lived in Melbourne for 20 years so we know good pizza. I just didn't fancy it that night).
Full of delicious Thai and Vietnamese foods to enjoy. Recommend Madam Pahtehh on Tumruat Rd which serve Vietnamese style food. The other restaurant is Maeya which serve Thai cuisine. Both of them got Michelin Star and you won't disappointed. In the evening walk around Nong Prajak Park and enjoy the scenery. Don't forget to pay respect to late Luang Ta Maha Bua at Dhammachedi Museum, Wat Pa Ban Tat.
I came to Udon for a 10 ady Vipassana Meditation, thus I have just a quick visit to Thai Isan market, UD town, night market, and nakha fabric market. Love the food and the local people here. Next time, I will visit Thai Chinese Museum and enjoy more food. Cheers
Nice little Japan-town across from UD Town, near the train station. Lots of choices. Udon Thani is easily walkable without a car. The Central Plaza is unsurprisingly centrally located and there's lots to do there.
Udon Thani itself is not a very nice place with little to see however we used it as a base for visiting other places nearby in a hire car such as Nong Khai , Ban Chiang and Phu Phra Bat National Park. It is also well connected by air with Bangkok. It has the usual night market and a big shopping central plaza and it is easy to change money at a good rate ( but not at the airport ).
